I've always been in the "just show the dadgum thing" camp. IMO there are only two valid reasons not to:

1. It is lost, or doesn't exist, and to admit as much just adds fuel to the birther fire.

2. It has something incriminating, like the Muslim theory.

 

To say that he has it and is just sitting on it because of some deep strategy doesn't pass the sniff test. Again IMO.

Do you know that the Republican Governor of hawaii said the short form was legit. This is the same woman who was stumping for McCain. If you lived in hawaii and needed a copy of your birth certificate for a driver's license or a passport, you would be issued what Obama has already shown as proof of birth. So, during the original birther controversy, the campaign finally released the "short form", to shut the nut jobs up. What happened? It stirred a hornets nest of whackos who said it was a forgery. why would he release anything else?

 

There was also his birth announcement in the Honululu newspaper. I guess they just figured he would be President so they called the newspaper from kenya so that they could one day say he was an American citizen.
