Street parking

Recommended Posts

So I was out of town for about a month, and returned to find an unfamiliar car parked in front of my house. I ignored it for the last week, during which time it did not move. Then I noticed a ticket on its window. It was so badly faded I couldn't make out the offense, but the date it was issued was mid-last month. So I figure this car has been sitting there for several weeks at least.

While looking at the vehicle, an unfamiliar neighbor walks up. He admits that the car is from "his shop", and that he parked it because it wasn't safe to leave it. He points down the street to his house, where a rusted 1970's-era car covered in masking tape and a sign "car in tow" sits, with one tire resting on a wood block. I ask him to move the vehicle in front of my house as I have contractors coming next week. He says he will move it, but two days later it hasn't budged. And he nonchalantly places the ticket back on the windshield without even glancing at it.

I know parking is permissible on public streets, but can one just deposit a vehicle indefinitely? The only limitation I can find is for unregistered vehicles or those in close proximity/blocking a driveway. Any suggestions if the car remains next week?

I'd love to help you out, since I actually have some experience of removing a car that was partially blocking my driveway... but somehow I don't think hiring a cheap hooker from Craisgslist, is going to be much help to you here. :ninja:

Call and make a police report of an abandon car in front of your property.

Cop will come by and put an orange sticker on the car and mark the wheels.

If it is not moved within 24 hours, it gets impounded.

Lot of focking balls on this guy parking his car in front of your house. Like Oldmaid, I have dealt with a similar situation in the past, although I doubt it will work for you.

At a restaurant I worked at some D-bag thought he could park his car on the lot indefinitely. After several days went buy, a few of us were getting drunk in the parking lot after close and the parked car came up. Someone walked over and broke the mirror off, to which everyone laughed. Next thing you know it was like a pack of animals fighting over meat, and the car was the meat. They tore the fock out that thing. One dude even took a sh1t in the front seat.

I arrived at work the next day and there it was, a trashed car on my parking lot. Called the police to have it towed off the lot since it was trashed and an eye sore now. The cops called the guy to tell him and he came to remove his car. When he arrived, I noticed it is this A-hole I use to work with at a grocery store when I was a kid.

He was focking pissed. I said we aren't responsible for abandoned cars. He got all sh1tty saying it wasn't abandoned. I told him I have seen the car parked in the lot all week. He said he just went out of town for a while. I said something about how fast he came to the store since he was out of town. He left huffing and puffing and the car was gone within an hour.

See how that works when someone implies something on the internet. It can be directed at you just as easily.

Did you hang your ass through the window or did you get completely out of the wheelchair?

This is good advice.

It's not abandoned if it has an up to date license plate and brake tag. If it's parked on the street, that's public property and he is not violating any laws. Being an a-hole isn't a crime yet.

It would be good advice if you hadn't already talked to the guy about it. At this point you need to wait a few weeks or he will automatically assume you called the cops on him. It's not a good idea to piss off someone who clearly has no qualms about disregarding social mores.

In many jurisdictions you can't leave a car parked, even legally, indefinitely. At my last house the law was 72 hours. They'd chalk your tire and if the chalk hadn't moved they'd tow it. I suggest the OP find out what the parking ordinance is in his neighborhood.

Smash window. Put car in neutral. Push

I was about to do this exact thing to a doosh that blocked my driveway once. For some reason right before I was about to smash his passenger side window, I reached down and tried the handle. Idiot left it unlocked. I opened the door, released the E brake and pushed it down the street a bit. Watching the guy try to explain to his friends where he had parked it and where he found it was pretty good.

After looking it up, HI has a law that any car that hasn't moved in 24 hours on public streets is 'abandoned', can be ticketed and possibly towed.

Yea, I thought about this - don't want to get into a war with someone who knows where I live and is the local equivalent of white trash. I was debating paying to have his car towed in front of his house - he pays nothing, but I make my point at a nominal cost.

Sucks. Shitty neighbors can really change the entire feel of the neighborhood.

Good luck with this doosh. If he just left it up on blocks in his front yard, well that pretty bad, but that's better than parking some rust bucket in front of your house.

Could always casually let the air out of one or two tires, just for effect, and to reinforce the whole abandoned thing. Don't slash the tire or anything bad like that, just set the air free from one of the tires.

IGW, I don't understand your reasoning. If you make a police report the plates are run. The owner is then identified and placed on file for about a year. If something happens to the complainant, that is the first suspect that is looked at and searched.

The interesting thing is the car in front of my house is a nice car, a late model Volvo SUV. It has what appears to be a new windshield and the neighbor initially mentioned it not being safe to keep it at "his shop" - I think it is somebody else's car. The rusted 1970s leadsled is parked with a block under one tire in front of his house.

Which suggests an alternative solution. I should report the clunker as abandoned. There is no way that vehicle has an up to date safety inspection and/or tags - it is labelled with a sign "car in tow" so I know it doesn't run. That vehicle is more likely to quickly be towed by the city and *voila* he will then have street parking in front of his own house. It's doubtful he'd pay to retrieve the clunker, but it will give him an opportunity to move the new car without suspecting I ratted him out.

Could this kill two birds with one stone?
