Westboro Baptist Church plan to protest at Newtown CT funerals

Recommended Posts

The Westboro Baptist Church announced plans to picket the funerals of the children and adults killed in Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, and almost as quickly counter-protesters have begun making plans to protect the grieving families.

Soon after members of the “church” tweeted about their intentions to picket funerals of those killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School, the internet began buzzing with those wanting to help stop the protest. On the link-sharing site Reddit, a post asking for ways to help quickly became one of the most popular submissions of the day.

If we're going to fight for our Second Amendment rights, we must also fight for these people and their First Amendment rights.

I have no problem with them protesting, as long as an ass whooping is in order of course.

I really hope this 'church' gets a real taste of what the people they protest against suffered some day soon.

Somebody should blow up the church and protest all of their funerals.

I have no problem with them protesting. Newtown should designate an area and allow them to exercise their First Amendment right to assemble and speech.

Yeah, just as long as they understand if they want to use their speech to disrupt the grieving process of a funeral involving parents who are saying goodbye to a child, they may end up dead or severly diaabled for life.

They can protest anywhere any time. At a funeral, especially one of horrific circumstance, doesnt seem like the common sense approach. I understand the protection of free speech but i would be willing to look the other way if someone were to take their anger out on those that would exploit a funeral.

Not sure the grieving process right is listed in the Constitution.

I'm surprised no one has brought up all the media trucks that are littered through the streets of Newtown. As annoying as they are they have a right to be there.

If Westboro thought they received resistance when they try to protest a soldiers funeral. I can't imagine what they will get for these children's funerals if they dare to show up.

[internet tough guy]If I were in the area it would be worth a night or two in jail to get some licks in on these fockers[/internet tough guy]

I imagine it'd be like Lee Harvey Oswald's funeral, where no mourners showed up and the press had to carry the casket.

It'd be a lot of fun brainstorming with my fellow protestors into where to take the bodies and what to do with them...

What the hell are they protesting?

These things are happening in the US because we're a God-less, evil society. :dunno:

They'll have signs like God Hates Phags and interesting stuff like that.

Well then I take back what I said...hold off on the cops and let God pass his "judgement" on them.

If it's true, Obama has an earthquake and hurricane machine. They may be on to something in Westboro.

Oh, so they're demonstrating. That's still odd, but at least it makes sense for media attention hoors bent on getting on the news. Protesting didn't make any kind of sense that I could see.

I never said that the protesters did not have the right to free speech in the area, nor did i say the parents had a right to a quit uninterrupted funeral. I dont even know where you got that i said it was constitutionally protected? Can you please quote me on this to refresh my memory? Thanks.

I was merely stating that if they exercise their right of speech at the funeral they should not be surprised if something should happen in a violent manner.

Now life isnt black and white all the time, you do understand that, correct? It is reprehensible IMO that these protests would happen at the funeral. They can happen anyplace at any time. Common sense, to me at least, would suggest allowing the prosession to go on without pushing their agenda out of respect and remorse for the family is the least they can do. The protesters can easily find a different spot or a different time to protest.

As for the news crews it doesnt help the situation, but at least they are not forming a protest during the hardest moment in these parents lives they will ever go through. I cannot even begin to imagine the rage one must feel when a protester is at my childs funeral without the humanity to allow me to grieve for a moment at the site.

I'm sure Martin Luther King Jr and his fellow civil rights leaders felt the same way. They didn't respond with violence. Nor did Ghandi.

Free speech needs to be protected regardless of the content.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit to find that this is exactly what is happening right now. I understand your point about freedom of expression but this is nuts. I see it more as provocation.

It absolutely is provocation. How better to make your point (as focked up as it is) than to even threaten to show up? Blacks marching through the streets of Birmingham, Alabama knowing full well that Bull Connor is a racist/member of the local KKK/law enforcement officer. It's pretty obvious that someone is going to snap and the whole thing will be caught on tape.

The media should collectively agree to ignore this organization. The media coverage is the reason they do it.

Regardless, I didn't think they could push the limit any further than a soldiers funeral, but I was wrong. I'll give em a 50% chance of not getting hurt. It is Connecticut after all.

Youtube has videos of Kevin Smith counter-protesting the WBC scum outside one of his movies, quality stuff. It would be nice if some lunatic could be directed to their little compound of incest and brainwashing, but killing that group of nuts probably wouldn't qualify as 'crazy'.

I agree, and i would not want any government/official banning of the protest. This is where the people take matters into their own hands to show how much they appreciate the exercising of free speech at a childs funeral.

Now comparing MLK and desegregation to this is a bit of a stretch.

Let the Baptist wackos have their protest. If anything, it hurts their cause.

It amazes me how brainwashed Americans are to protect and uphold the Constitution at all costs.

Yeah, true. You should probably walk into a VA hospital and tell those guys your thoughts on this. I'm sure you won't have a piss pan thrown in your face.

I wish people would stop paying attention to these focks. Let 'em protest, but don't provide protection and don't put it all over the papers. They do this because of the publicity.

Yep, about the same response the WBC would get from our vets too.

There's a difference between voicing your opinion and shredding any sense of human decency while hiding behind the Constitution. I would fight for the right to say what they want. I will not fight for the way they express themselves. It's deplorable. Anyone who can't see the difference just ain't that bright.

You could make the same argument for flag burners. I'm sure there would be vets who would have that same opinion. The sad thing about our country is that people take the position Gepetto takes. Almost every political who gets elected probably couldn't even pass a basic immigration test on civics.

The Baptist wackos have the right to "peacefully" assemble. Just like those Occupy asshats or WBC.

Would we have porn it if wasn't for the Constitution?

Impossible in the information age. It's not like these guys are garnering headlines anyway. Nobody really thinks they have anything important to say. You guys reduce pretty much all behavior as a cry for attention. These focks are fundamentalists. They believe in their cause....no matter how crazy.....and has been said a million times.....you can't stop crazy.

But don't you think that the media on all levels knows this? The only reason they even get any press is to exploit they are nuttier than squirrel turds.

Are you peacefully assembling at a funeral? Could it not be argued that their protests inflict additional psychological anguish?

Gepetto has a point. The Constitution provide a framework for our freedoms. It does not say anything goes. I disagree with everything about WBC, but I think it is important they have the right to say what they want. I do not think they should be able to voice their opinions at a funeral. It goes against all human decency.

I don't see the problem with saying certain events should be free from protest....weddings/funerals/etc. Doing so doesn't deny anybody their 1st amendment rights. It does preserve what little civility we have left in our society.

Wow. Thats easy to say when its not your kid at that funeral. Sounds more like a "it doesnt affect me so who cares" approach. I know its not what you mean here, but it does sound like it.
