The constitution

It seems like a decent number of people that believe that gun restrictions should not be strengthened because of the Constitution also believe that it is ok to keep an entire religion from immigrating to our country even though that is also a constitutionally protected right.

Those are Amendments to be sure. Not sure what either have to do with immigration. Contrary to popular belief we have never had an open door policy. :dunno:

Uh....plenty of Muslims here in America. They have Mosques and freely practice their religion. America isn't banning a religion by exercising caution over who comes into the country from a terrorist breeding ground. Controversial? Sure. Unconstitutional? :wacko:

keeping an entire religion from immigrating to the US is completely non sensical, irrational, impossible to implements and a non starter... Its like free college tuition... red meat for the crazies

Actually this is sentiment that appears to be spreading across the liberal community. They feel illegals are entitled to our Constitutional Rights because their feet are on our soil, so the leap to those headed here, legal or not, is not a large one.

If by liberal community you mean Supreme Court, then alright.

You are underestimating constitution's effects on savings throws. Open a a door with a hidden poison arrow trap or mistake a gas spore for a beholder with a low constitution and you'll change your tune.

I've never understood the strict constructionist version of constitutionalism. The sheer number of amendments speaks to the fact that the Floundering Fuhrers weren't exactly omniscient.

 

For example, I believe in gun rights, I believe in hunting and self-protection, but the fact that the gun nuts immediately go to the FF and the constitution EVERY TIME anyone proposes even the most reasonable gun legislation is bizarre. Do you also believe that black men are worth 60% of a white man and women are completely worthless too? Because the constitution says that too. (Oh yeah, but we AMENDED that! That was a historical aberation, you need to understand CONTEXT!) - What's the focking difference? Do we think these guys imagined a world beyond the musket?)

 

It reminds me of the idiot fundies who rely upon Leviticus to discriminate against gheys, but still love to eat lobster. (hint, read Leviticus, they're both "an abomination unto the Lord.) You don't get to cherry pick the bible OR the constitution if you want to be a strict fundamentalist constructionist.

 

But, like most things in Amurica, the 10% fringe on either side rule the roost while the 80% pay the price.

Me neither. And the founders (esp. Jefferson) never intended for it to be interpreted that way either.

 

Our world is beyond their imagining; why is our government limited to their words?

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights

 

Doesn't say all AMERICAN men, but that ALL MEN....
