Do you drive with your lights on during the day?

Recommended Posts

I do. I have done this since I was in my 20s. I don't even remember why or exactly when I started doing this. I just do. Yesterday I was thinking about it and decided to count the amount of people I saw with their lights on during broad daylight. I passed 56 vehicles on the way home and of them 11 did NOT have their lights on. This is obviously not a scientific study. That being said it does seem like a lot of people who use their headlights in the daytime.

My truck has day lamps.... I would think most cars 10 years or less old would have them also. The switch is set to auto, the sensor decides which lights to use, I never turn on/off my lights.

Most of the time I have my headlights on... I wish it was a law that any moving vehicle would have their headlights on and this does NOT include the stupid day-time running lamps...

Why?

:dunno:

Because when it starts to rain in the early hours or late hours it makes it hard to see cars that you are coming up on if they only have their day-time running lamps on...

Then you have the people in black or grey cars that don't have day-time lamps and you try to change lanes during dark times because of rain, you can't see them very well because they blend in... Requiring a law to always have headlights on fixes this issue... In fact, I love 15 North in Maryland from Points of Rocks to US 340, it requires headlights being on at all times on the two-lane road which is pretty straight... If a cop sees you and you don't have them on, there is a ticket coming your way...

Only if it's raining.

Even then people don't do this, especially when it is a state law that if your wipers are on (and not intermittent), the headlights must be on...

This.

In fact, I got in my rental yesterday (Jetta, pretty bare bones config) and realized 1/2 way through my drive that they WEREN'T auto, which surprised me in this day and age. Then when I turned the car off it beeped at me to turn the lights off, which I needed to do manually. Neanderthal Germans...

Cars sold in Canada are required to automatically turn on headlights when you start the vehicle. Safety reasons. You are more likely to see the headlights than just a vehicle. Don't understand why this is not the same in the US.

It is especially helpful to see cars on a hot summer day when heat shimmers can obscure things.

Same. I haven't had to touch a light switch in almost 20 years.
