Top 5 American Bands

Recommended Posts

I think CSNY qualifies as American. They met and formed in Laurel Canyon, and were a huge part of that California scene. They also wrote one of the great protest songs of the 60's (Ohio.) I'm fairly sure all of their albums were recorded in America.

Agreed. They are American. Fleetwood Mac simply isn't. I understand the addition it Nicks and Buckingham made it more American but the Brits still outnumber them.

So HT messaged me asking for someone to say the Romones?

Weird.

FFT is his primary social outlet. It must be killing him to only post as Baker Boy. :(

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a band and deserve consideration in this thread imo

The peter Greene version was British.

The Stevie nicks era I would call American.

This. The additions of Buckingham and Nicks made it an American band imo.

Besides, shouldn't we celebrate Brits that fled to America to start over?

Sorry but CCR is a focking joke.

Jerry, we've disagreed on a lot of stuff over the years. But this is the most egregious, ridiculous, anti-American philistine crap you've ever posted. Why do you hate rock and roll?

Later in the thread I said I was drinking...  :dunno:

Seriously though, I think they are overrated.  IMO you can basically break songs down into music, vocals, and lyrics.  CCR music sucks, it's basically simple 3 or 4 chord progressions with mostly rhythm guitar.  The voice sucks.  You might say it "goes" with the music, because you are used to hearing it together, but objectively he isn't a good singer.  Lyrics, meh... Born on the bayou... born on the bayou... born on the bayou... I'd have to dig into their lyrics more, but I'm not interested.

I could say the exact same for Tom Petty.

I wouldn't say I hate them.  I appreciate that both groups have a place in the history of American music.  I just don't think either should sniff a spot on any top bands list.

I really like Tom Petty but borderline hate CCR.

Wow. You two are pretty much the first people I've ever heard knock CCR. They're one of the great crossover bands that appealed to rednecks and country fans, but also had some rock n roll chops. While some of their lyrics aren't real inspiring, some are (Fortunate Son, among others). Fogerty was a helluva singer, IMO. And if you're going to disqualify 3 and 4 chord bands, well, I don't know what to tell ya.

Also, I stand firmly with the Dude:

Likewise. Him, Eddie Van Halen, and Lemmy Kilmister are the only people I've never met that deeply affected me when they passed.

How can anyone dislike “Lodi” and “Proud Mary”?

We've determined @jerryskids is a philistine with dubious, if not non-existent taste.

@HellToupee has some decent musical taste, but has his wires crossed in a number of other areas, so I can only chalk him up to poor judgment. SMH liking the Replacements, Husker Du and Mission of Burma but not CCR. It's hurtful.

So the Top 5 all have to be in the same genre of rock or popular music?

I thought this was just supposed to be a list of people's Top 5 favorite American bands or artists.
