MDC 7,471 Posted October 4, 2017 we are arguing that the United States murder rate has dropped even more during that same time without a gun ban The US size and demographics are so wildly different than Australia, that's a pretty meaningless argument. SUXBNME 1,512 Posted October 4, 2017 lol you're talking about a bolt action rifle. That makes up a small percentage of guns. That's like saying "well the recall on the mini coops involves a lot of cars!" Yea it's a stick shift which makes up a very small percentage of cars. Use your head for more than a hat rack Mini coops are also one of the biggest pieces of sh1t on the road today. Just thought I'd point that out.

MDC 7,471 Posted October 4, 2017 agree completely, yet you guys use Australia continually as a look it works argument I didn't use it, I'm just taking issue with people denying the actual hard fact that homicide rates have actually declined in that time. If you want to argue that gun laws in the US or Australia have no affect on homicide rates have at it.

IMMensaMind 462 Posted October 5, 2017 Wait: the overall murder rate in Australia spiked within a year or two of the gun ban and its dropped ever since. I believe it's at it's lowest level in decades. Are we arguing that the gun ban had no affect? Why don't you read what the argument is instead of guessing what the argument is? It was plainly explained to you. The murder rate in the US dropped the same as it did in Australia. But we ADDED guns. So - clearly - you cannot attribute a drop in the murder rate in Australia to a lack of guns, since it nearly exactly duplicated the drop in the murder rate in America. In fact - and I'm repeating myself because you're apparently too lazy to read the original post - if more guns is supposed to equal MORE murder, and our murder rate dropped - then Australia merely keeping up with our rate of decline instead of massively outpacing it as a result of their ban means that removing guns from their society prevented the murder rate from declining MORE. IMMensaMind 462 Posted October 5, 2017 There are 194 countries in the world (depending on how you count.) You think 93rd in murder rate is ok? Considering that most of the countries on earth are overpopulated poverty stricken third world sh!tholes, that doesnt impress. Especially since we have more police per capita and more imprisioned persons per capital than most. Compare us to other industrialized first world countries. Europe. The civilized parts of Asia. Hell, even many of the not so civilized parts. Anyway. I regret getting sucked into this. Its a waste of time. Nobodys opinions are gonna change. Welcome back to the sewer over here at the geek club. Here's someone who thought about guns and gun control exactly as you did. Her name is Leah Libresco. She's a statistician and former writer for 538. She's a leftist. Unlike you, she did the research. Exhaustively. And she was forced to face the reality that you and others here refuse to face. This should be eye-opening for you, if you actually read it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/i-used-to-think-gun-control-was-the-answer-my-research-told-me-otherwise/2017/10/03/d33edca6-a851-11e7-92d1-58c702d2d975_story.html?utm_term=.75795ee81dc9 An excerpt: I researched the strictly tightened gun laws in Britain and Australia and concluded that they didnt prove much about what Americas policy should be. Neither nation experienced drops in mass shootings or other gun related-crime that could be attributed to their buybacks and bans. Mass shootings were too rare in Australia for their absence after the buyback program to be clear evidence of progress. And in both Australia and Britain, the gun restrictions had an ambiguous effect on other gun-related crimes or deaths. The article hotlinks the actual research she cites. penultimatestraw 473 Posted October 5, 2017 yes we have had this discussion ad naseum, and nothing you have every shown, says that they increase suicides or homicides, just that the guns are used more frequently to do the job, they don't create more deaths Jesus, dude, did you even read the links?? I've posted them at least three times, one specifically for your benefit. Gun ownership increases your risk of suicide and homicide, period. Not just suicide or homicide by gun. Period. penultimatestraw 473 Posted October 5, 2017 The car statement is blatant stupidity. He KNOWS it. He just doesn't want to ADMIT it. Despite the statistics that someone died from a car wreck, what, once every 26 seconds? Average of 3,276/day. You do the math (just did which is roughly ever you 26 seconds). So...he's either stupid or doesn't want to admit it. I'm going with doesn't want to admit it. Dumbest argument someone can make in reference to it. Besides, weren't these people just getting upset over a guy using a car as a weapon in Charlottesville to run over people in a crowd? You may be right, I'm not sure. Although almost everyone is a driver or passenger in motor vehicles at some point, but people too poor/unable to own a vehicle probably have their own set of problems. I'm not saying owning a car doesn't increase your risk of dying in a car accident; I'm wondering if an overall mortality difference has ever been shown between car owners and non owners.
