Coral reefs impacted by sunscreen

Recommended Posts

I missed this one. Seems like an easy fix. No?

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hawaii-ban-sunscreen-chemicals_us_5ae93604e4b022f71a02fc48

Hawaii may soon be the first state in the U.S. to ban sunscreens with chemicals that harm nature.

State lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill that bans the sale of sunscreens that have chemicals believed to damage coral reefs. The ban is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2021, once it is signed by Gov. David Ige (D).

The bill specifically prohibits the sale and distribution of any sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. Prescription sunscreens with those chemicals are not affected by the ban.

Years of studies have shown that many chemicals in some of the most common sunscreens have chemicals that damage — and sometimes kill — fragile coral reef systems.

Oxybenzone, which is found in more than 3,500 skin care products, is effective for protecting skin from damaging sun rays. However, a 2015 study revealed that the chemical is toxic to developing coral and increases the coral’s susceptibility to bleaching.

“The chemical not only kills the coral, it causes DNA damage in adults and deforms the DNA in coral in the larval stage, making it unlikely they can develop properly,” researchers wrote in the study of the chemical’s effect on reefs in Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

And about 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in coral reefs worldwide, according to that study.

I use the environmentally friendly stuff that tropical places ask travelers to bring. Idk if those include the chemicals mentioned? Theres a lot of people who just dont give a fock, probably still wont give a fock either.

Good, shouldn’t be using toxic chemicals in anything that can get into the environment like that. Unlike global warming, this is the kind of thing that actually makes a difference and affects us.

No kidding. Can't the sunscreen manufacturers just put a warning sticker on the bottle? "Not fur use on coral reefs"

Useless. Looks like most of the coral reefs will be dead before this law goes into effect anyway.

So you'd rather humans get skin cancer than water rocks die?

Okay. ..

Water rocks? oh the humanity.

When is humanity going to face the root of man's problems... over population?

Instead we want to bend over backwards to accommodate more and more people.

World population is currently over 7 billion. In 30 years it's projected to be 10 billion. No more coral reefs to worry about, many species will go extinct, increased global warming, depletion of resources... humanity sucks.

can we now assume sunscreen is also melting the polar icecaps?

The natural sunscreens (mineral based) are better for you anyway. Most of the major brands carry these now.

Okay. ..

How many people die of skin cancer caused by exposure to the sun every year?

How many lives have been saved by sun screen?

No wonder you cut and paste everything. You're indecipherable otherwise.

Woah.

According to the sky screamers, global warming is what has caused the Great Barrier Reef to lose 60% of its total coral in the past 2 years.
