Djgb13 2,338 Posted October 22, 2018 Helping a friend build one. She wants to do one with rocks around the pit that you can sit your chairs in as well but shes not sure how many rocks she needs. I have no clue either. She wants something like this https://goo.gl/images/GBvXeT Maybe not as big but big enough for at least 3 chairs.
kilroy69 995 Posted October 22, 2018 Second one you need about 500 stones like that. First one is like what. 7 big rocks.
RLLD 3,455 Posted October 22, 2018 I paid a company to do it, plus add a half circle wall behind it for sitting and a patio area.....I could not have made it look as good as they did
Djgb13 2,338 Posted October 22, 2018 Im talking about the rocks on the ground. The ones you set the chairs on. Im trying to figure out how many she needs for that. The actual pit itself we already have a general idea and what stones we need. But the rocks on the ground is the problem Im having figuring out. They sell them by the pound so I have no clue how many pounds Id need to pour on the ground around the pit

You would need to figure out how deep you want the stones and how large the space is then do the math. It seems to me having small stones where the chairs sit would suck, I would rather have something solid.

Me personally, I want to actually dig into the ground and have the seating built into the area that was dug up. But she wants small stones for some reason. Guess she thinks it looks pretty. Tomorrow Ill ask have her measure how big she wants it and then have her look at the bags.

I'm no builder but if she thinks she's just gonna pour out bags of small rocks on top of her grass and voila, it's not gonna work. I think she will need to mark the area, dig down a few inches, add sand, tamp it down, then add the stones. You may or may not even need to add some sort of weed barrier underneath it all. Her brother is coming down to help. And yes I know all the groundwork we will need to do. Only problem I was having was figuring out just how many bags of rocks she was going to need. The plan was to clear out all the grass and weeds then pour sand and add rocks on top. Of course it sounds simpler on here but didnt think I needed to go into detail on exactly how we were doing this. Just trying to figure out the bags of rocks. Never bought rocks before so Im clueless when it comes to it

seafoam1 1,879 Posted October 23, 2018 I don't think this completely answers all of your questions but can give you ideas. This guy used gravel. I saw a couple mentions, including this piece, about not digging into the ground, but rather using a landscape fabric cover with borders. Makes sense since you don't want weeds making their way up through the stones. That would suck. You can also compare the size of his area and the cost associated. This is a quick read if you are interested... https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Fire-Pit-and-Seating-Area/

MTSkiBum 1,594 Posted October 23, 2018 Ha! Ive probably backed more trailers this year alone than a lot of people have here in their entire lives When you can back your boat down the ramp between 2 other boats on a triple ramp and get the boat in the water before either of those losers, then you can brag. Until then you are an amateur. Also, watching people at the boat ramp is quite funny.

avoiding injuries 1,220 Posted October 23, 2018 Gravel or grey stone are both about $45 per ton at a Landscaping store. I can get it delivered to my house for $10, so $55 per ton delivered. I would have two tons delivered.
