Also, "I totally hear that because my brother had a delivery service for medical marijuana. The clientele were parents with their kids in school," board member Richie Masadas appeared to say.

What's sad is they are calling their teachers babysitters. That's how they approach their profession.

Fuk them.  They openly admit their teachers are babysitters, pay them accordingly.  Some professions have a true lack of awareness and the feeling of being untouchable.

I'm not sure you guys want to pay teachers like you pay babysitters. How much does a babysitter make per hour $10-$20 an hour? Now do that for 30 kids.

They’re saying the parents think of the teachers as babysitters, which is true in a lot of cases.

Some of those other statements were much worse though

Teachers have had it way too good for too long. They don’t deserve the pedestal they are put on. They continually prove it.

The worst thing about this is that this isn't the only school board that feels this way.  They just got caught.

You miss big time on this one. They should have been talking about their obligations to the students they teach (or not teach in this case) with the kind of concern that teachers should have. Kids need school and parents know it. That's why many parents base their location desires on the school district their kids will be going to. They should realize that good education is expensive and that it takes two parents to work to put a few kids through school over a 16 year period. Fock them. They take no pride in their jobs. They see themselves as babysitters. And that is how many of them approach their jobs.

They're not independent contractors.  What would a sitter make that works for a company?  $10 an hour?

Good thing it’s only 180 days,  6 hours a day, unlike the rest of the workers in this country.

One part of me agrees with you whole hearted on this. Another part of me is, let the kids be kids in grade school. But decrease the amount of summer vacation as you go into high school. By senior year, you go to school 12 months a year with a couple 2 week vacation periods. Get people ready for life. This would be something that would be easy to phase in to the school system as we know it.

I think in grade school the kids learn more in the summer time off about social interaction. Grade school work takes little effort to understand unless the kid has mental issues.

College is even worse. Winter break can be a month and a half. Summer break is longer than in grade school.

Rofl....you act like the top 2 percent of teachers represent the majority.  You are so wrong.

What pedestal?  Everyone hates teachers!

To be fair, the average teenage kid is just barely there, goes to school, does enough to get by.  The ones BELOW that "average" are human filth, destined for prison. And then you have the high performers of course, who bust their arse and eventually secure some success for which they are vilified....

I give teachers some credit, they tend to deal with the spawn of some of the worst parenting one could possibly imagine, but I would say the majority of the kids are decent enough.

They DO play something of an important role, and probably should be better paid.  But at the end of the day, the well-being and success of the children is mostly on the parents. Sadly, there are substantial amounts of people out there who are just worthless, and produce equally worthless adults to replace them

The thing I'm most disappointed by them is that after a year of online meetings they don't know when other people are in the meeting?

If your wife isn't on a pedestal, then move to NJ.  These people here will put her on one.

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/email-records-revealed-how-teachers-unions-are-fighting-to-keep-virginia-schools-shuttered/

In his community, most stores, restaurants, churches, and salons are open, Taliaferro said, “but not the schools. The schools are somehow too dangerous.”

“The high school students here in Fairfax County, you will find them working at your local grocery stores, at your local Chipotle,” he said. “So the teachers unions want you to believe that it is too dangerous to open schools while they go to the grocery stores to buy groceries, or to the Chipotle to buy a burrito bowl to go from a high school kid that they’re afraid to teach. That is Twilight Zone stuff.”

These dopes are in the next town over. One has already resigned. Protest scheduled for tomorrow, I believe. Shouldn't be long before the rest of them resign or get removed.

Who cares? It’s the teachers and their union that run the show and are ruining things. They are the problem.

I dunno I always thought school boards and the actual teachers often don’t really agree on a lot of things

So? School boards get to hire the Superintendent. They have little control over the union and their contract. The unions run the show. Isn’t it obvious at this point?

My point is people seemed to use this thread to rail on teachers when it was the school board, not the teachers being the issue here.

The teachers are the issue. They are the ones holding everything back. This isn’t an issue and nobody WGAF if the schools were open

I think that depends on the districts.  In a lot of school districts in NJ, boards are made up of primarily educators.  The overwhelming majority here are either current teachers or administrators or retired teachers or administrators.  If teachers and board members don't agree on things, then they really only have themselves to blame because they're involved in all of the decisions.

In the district where I went to school, there were 15 board members.  My friend's mom was pretty mad with the way things were being done so she ran for a spot and happened to win.  Her brother also ran and won too.  They were the only two non-educators on the board.  Basically, anytime decisions were made, the educators pretty much ignored my friend's mom and uncle and did what they wanted.   Even if some of the members agreed with them, those members just voted with the others.

Here's the funny part about the education system, at least in NJ anyway.  The teachers have their own union and the administrators have theirs.  Usually when teachers complain, it's about policies that the administrators put in place.  Though, instead of blaming the administrators, they blame the government.  Here's the best part.  They still vote for those people!!  NJ is pretty much blue.  There are definitely pockets of red in the state and some towns are dark red... basically, there are no Democrat politicians.  Though, that's on the local level.  Of NJ's 21 counties, I believe the county officials are Democrat let in 18 of them.  So even if the town is red, the likelihood is that the County people above them are blue.  Democrat county officials give more money to Democrat towns than Republican towns.  Shocking, I know.
