You need to put your opponent in a position where they can't escalate.  You do that by being the first to escalate to the maximum, so your opponent has no move.  He's playing the brinkmanship game by trying to force the US to not do anything.  How is this not obvious?

That's obviously not what is happening.  In your scenario, Putin warns of nuclear war, and the West stops aiding Ukraine.  In reality, Putin warns of nuclear war, and the West keeps arming Ukraine.  That should make it VERY obvious that this is not brinkmanship.  This is world war 3.
