So I'll admit that I didn't know much about how box office numbers worked prior to these discussions.  I don't work in the industry and it's not a hobby.  But after 30 mins of googling I'll call myself an expert now.  So now I'll correct where you are wrong.

So Guardians is +216, not +140. 

Mermaid is -82, not -240.

Black Panther was released in 2022, same as Avatar which was their most successful movie in recent history.

Ant Man is -24, not -240

So the total profit for 2023 is not -170.  If you include avatar sales alone it's in the black, but again, that's technically a 2022 release (Dec 16 2022)

You also didn't include Indiana Jones and Elemental.  Indiana Jones has a tough hill to climb to break even, and Elemental is likely a bust.  I include these in full transparency, even though the numbers aren't good so far for Indy, but it's early.

I shared all this in case anyone is interested in learning more and having an honest conversation.

Looking at the industry as a whole, I think it's still struggling from covid, theater closures, costs, people giving up on movies, etc.  And I think the whole industry might be in trouble.

Elemental seems to be making a bit of a comeback, as it has grossed $362 million and apparently is now the highest grossing animated Pixar film since Covid.

From what I hear it’s actually a good movie.  But the marketing was sh1t.  Because of that it seems the marketing budget may have been lower than typical and I’ve seen several estimates that it “only” needs $400 million to break even, although of course it’s still a bit shy of that.  But not a total flop like some initially thought.

I won't expose my kids to them any further, and will encourage anyone with kids to do the same.
