“The Only” - Paramount+ Doc on USWNT Goalie Briana Scurry

Recommended Posts

Interesting story.  She was truly a pioneer as a star black gay female soccer player.  Never knew she dealt with a serious concussion at the end of her career while playing in a fledgling pro league.  Also probably deserved more fame for their 99 World Cup win but was overshadowed by Brandi Chastain’s bra.

Of course does have a brief segment where she talks about George Floyd so I’m sure no one here will want to watch.

Not only is it soccer, it's women's soccer.   Tim is probably a WNBA fan too.

We don't know that for a fact (Brianna, that is)

I know you guys probably enjoyed the 99 women’s World Cup.  That was before most of the “wokeness” even (I didn’t even know Scurry was gay until watching this), although there was also a segment about how the team fought for better pay.

What's wrong with women's soccer?  One of the few women's sports that I'll watch.  International soccer, softball and sand volleyball are enjoyable.

Women's soccer, softball, and beach volleyball are the women's sports I will happily watch- for varying reasons.

I remember enjoying it. Also Chastain's bra.  That's all I remember tho. No idea who this goalie is. :dunno:

Was she shot by police resisting arrest and not obeying orders and being violent? No? Then nobody cares.

more woke nonsense from Netflix trying to find any story on any (fill in the blanks…black, ghey , trans, illegal) any sob story where they can place a perceived oppressed label on and try to tug at the heartstrings.

Well first of all it's not on Netflix.

The story isn't about her being "oppressed" dummy, for the most part it's just a typical sports doc about an underappreciated athlete from 20+ years ago that many have likely forgotten about (or may not have known much about to begin with).   She was one of the best goalies in the world and helped lead the USWMT to an Olympic Gold Medal and World Cup title.

It basically made a point to call out that she "wasn't" oppressed, as she grew up in a Minnesota suburb where she was basically the only black person on most of her teams.   But yes it does call out how she inspired many young black athletes.

The main "oppression" she faced was fighting for medical care after she got a concussion which ended her playing career.

That Bingo card is scarily accurate.

I was looking for one that said "Virtue Signalling" but couldn't find it.  I bet we could make one for all the right wing trolls here.

The GC hates Hope Solo right?  She didn't come out looking great in this doc, as it talked about how she was benched for Scurry and then complained about it (she declined to be interviewed for the doc)

Doesn't seem that interesting.   You can feel free to call me a racist homophobe for saying that if you have to.

Digby needs to borrow his parents Paramount+ username/pw first.

Probably has to clean the Cheetos stains off the remote too so it works.

I was in a summer share on the Jersey Shore in 99 and we all went to the bar to root for that team. Now I root against them.

I would have. As soon as I was done catching up on the View.

He's trolling.  No one cares about this, including tim.  People rarely post threads on the shows they watch unless they're all time greats and cultural phenomenon.

That means he's either trolling because he knows no one would watch this or he wants to seem extra virtuous.  I mean is he really so taken with this story that he felt compelled to post about it in a community that he knows won't be interested in it?

Lol, like I said there’s only a small element of wokeness in it.  Considering this is a sports message board, I thought there might be some people interested in learning a little more about one of the greatest US womens soccer players in history.  And I doubt many people would have heard about it (although I think it actually just came out recently).

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize the following were “all time greats”

DB Cooper Where are you

Stranger Things

Terminal List

Quantum Leap

Beavis and Butthead do the Universe
