Thornton Melon 620 Posted March 9, 2023 I don't see a problem with it, as long as they don't allow gubmint employees, i.e., municipal clerks, to refuse to issue a marriage license. If you're gay, and want to marry your boyfriend, find someone willing to perform the ceremony. Hell, just about anybody can get ordained online these days. Yeah, so it’s not “gutting” gay marriage or interracial marriage. Guttertard falls for it again. That being said, the clerks should do their job. It’s not a religious ceremony. Don’t like it? Get another job. I disagree with this proposed law but it seems to be grandstanding to me. What do the kids call it , a “nothing burger”? Sounds right. So basically an effort to preemptively stop lawsuits (a la Colorado baker). They can still get married, they just can't force someone against it, to perform the ceremony? The drafting welcomes the interpretations being advanced in this thread. That is one of the biggest issues with ALL the recent “red state” laws. They say a law is meant to keep porn out of school libraries. But… that was already illegal. And the new law was written in such a way as to make every book a possible lawbreaker. And since they made it a felony, and nobody knows what books are or aren’t banned, the schools took out all the books to make sure none of the teachers ended up in jail because a group of parents decide they don’t like Goodnight Moon anymore. They’re using legislation as virtue signaling, but the side effects are badly-written laws that cause major problems.

ANYONE can refuse to officiate or potentially refuse to issue a marriage license to people, just because. Clergy I get giving a pass to, given religious freedom. But allowing a county clerk to refuse to issue a marriage license because they refuse to reevaluate their own antiquated beliefs? BS. More trampling on individual rights by the party that skyscreams about 1A and 2A incessantly. Individual freedom is not reserved just for the people that look and think a certain way. I have very fond memories of reading Goodnight Moon, night after night, to my youngest many years ago now. It was what replaced the reading of You are a Good Dog, Carl. I don't see the proof of that. The article says it, and their link to support it says the following: Quote While lawmakers wrangled over some of the bill’s details, one Tennessean said the bill has broader effects. Michael Rady, who described himself as a Nashville resident and voter, asked the committee if they wanted a headline to read, “Tennessee lawmakers make marriage white-only and straights-only in 2023.” Rady explained the bill would apply not only to religious leaders but to county clerks who certify marriage licenses. He said it would be a “jumbo-sized green light for any county clerk to deny a marriage license to a couple based on their race, gender, or religion.” He said he and his partner are planning a Tennessee wedding this fall. The couple is gay and Rady said he is Jewish, while his partner is not. While their save-the-date cards have already been mailed, he said the bill would jeopardize his marriage and those of all LGBTQ couples here. ”No spiritual leader is compelled under any law to officiate a wedding they disagree with,” Rady said. “As someone planning a gay, interfaith wedding here in Tennessee, I’m here to tell you that I can’t imagine anyone like me wanting to have their wedding officiated by someone who is against it.” https://www.memphisflyer.com/state-bill-threatens-lgbtq-marriage-here-opponents-say So... some dood who is a gay Jew says it is the case. None of the lawmakers on either side of the debate seems to be saying it though. If I'm wrong and clerks can refuse to issue the license, then I'm on record as saying I disagree. But this seems like the "don't say gay" MSM message to the lemmings about a bill that doesn't say gay.
