Father in ICU

So the deal with the potassium is tough. You mentioned fluid buildup. So they most likely have your dad on one or two different water pills. And specifically lasix. The downside to those things? They leech away potassium as they drain excess fluid out of the system.

So, while getting fluid away from the heart and lungs is without a doubt a good thing, a lack of potassium can directly impact heart rhythms.

There's another medication that I take as well as lasix. It has potassium in it. Just because of the above.  I'll try to look up the name.

Tough to go though, I've lost both my parents. Hoping for the best.

My father had a mild stroke about 3 weeks ago. Fluid in lungs, a few blood clots and a mass.

was doing better until Saturday night (was in a different unit for a couple weeks), but they readmitted him Sunday morning.  Mother called me and I shot down.  More stable but has a tube to breath.  He was very sedated yesterday and a quite a bit today… but more responsive. Episode last night, but treated quickly.

😢

I'm sorry Buddy

I'll pray for your Dad

Fan damn tastic. That's great!

Dad sounds like a trooper!

Best thing I've heard all day.

I'm sure you too.

Interesting study out of the Mayo Clinic:

Significantly more strokes can be tied to Americans massive increase in Cilantro consumption.

Hey, Science.

Interesting.  I was going to mention that when my daughter went to the hospital for her diabetes diagnosis (she was in diabetic ketoacidosis), most of her time in the ICU was to slowly raise her very low potassium levels.

@Bier Meister, fantastic to hear the good news.

3 consecutive nights with no episodes. Looked pretty good yesterday with positive spirits. Difficulty speaking due to the tube. Cannot eat yet (also due to the tube). A lot of optimism. Will need surgery to repair a valve, but moving in a good direction.

I don't see any reason to bring them into this.

Regardless, good news!

Very sorry to hear, brother, and I hope for a speedy recovery.

My dad was in ICU. I slept in a chair in his room for a week.

This morning dad was having some trouble breathing.

His bp elevated and lungs started to fill with liquid.

He has an oxygen mask but no tube and has responded well to treatment.

Nitrogen to reduce hypertension and bp.  Not on it currently.

Stable

Update:

mid-May dad was able to get the surgery to repair his valve.  rehabbed well. returned home on 6/2.  he has really progressed nicely. came home with a walker, now just a cane. they are in san francisco (4 story house)... doing great with the stairs. driving. played his first round of golf yesterday.

Mom needed a break and went down south to visit my brother and his family.  i am spending sun-wed with him.  he is his typical crotchety self, but we are having some fun.

@TommyGavin

Last night we went to a little Austrian place. he is not really a beer drinker, but he was happy to share about 4 with me.  schnitzel, spätzle, brat.. pretty filling dinner.
