UAW strikes at GM, Ford, Stellantis plants after no new contract reached

Recommended Posts

https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/uaw-strike-gm-ford-stellantis-after-failed-contract-agreement

The United Auto Workers union went on strike at three plants owned by the Big Three automakers – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis – after the two sides did not reach a new labor deal on Thursday night.

The workers are striking at a GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri; a Stellantis plant in Toledo, Ohio; and a Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan. Plants that were not called upon to strike will work without a contract, UAW President Shawn Fain said.

They want to work 32 hours and be paid for 40.  I dont even know what advantage that is.  The companies can say ok and then give slightly smaller raises over a period of time until they work 32 hours and get paid for 32.

It's hard to believe they couldn't reach an agreement. I mean, all they were asking for was a 40% pay hike (over 3 or 4 years) and a 32 hour work week. Of course they still want to get paid for 40 hours.  Oh, and pensions. Gotta bring back the old school pensions for the new guys.

I thought you Trumpers were for the blue collar working man?

Sure am. Until they make ridiculous demands like a 32 hour work week and a 40 pct raise. There are limits ya know. Like I’m all for sex education in the upper grades. Info about pregnancy, std’s etc. Like it once was. Not the preaching that is has become.  But it’s what you leftists do. Take a good idea, twist it and make it worse.

I love how they say they are struggling...because they need a new 4wd to pull their 20ft center console boats, and they are adding another wing to their house.

Good and I hope the UAW gets most of what they want. You can’t be pro labor and anti union.

Lots of steelworkers thought they could ask for the moon too. We still use steel, right? Why are all of those plants closed?

I’m not making things up. You’ve claimed for years you’re for the working man. Now the working man asserts his rights and lo and behold, you’re actually anti union and straight in the pocket of the corporations. Nobody is surprised but I thought I’d point it out for posterity :dunno:

Yeah. I think the auto workers should get zero. You’re a child. And a fraud.

On paper, without deeper knowledge or context, the demands seem somewhat absurd and certainly exorbitant. Which is why I suspect there IS deeper knowledge and context here which would serve to make them make more sense. But who knows? Hopefully some sort of reasonable compromise can be reached.

The UAW’s demands seem excessive? It’s almost like asking for more than you expect to get is a common negotiating tactic. :o

Some of you folks should read “The Art of the Deal.”

It means you have zero issue with an oligarch like Zuckerberg spending a fortune on an election but you were all worked up when the Koch brothers did it. Remember those guys? Oh yeah, you like them now. And Bush and Cheney.

Asking for a lot in negotiations is fine. Going on strike because you didn’t get them isn’t. It’s almost like you have no real world experience.

Holy non sequitur!

And no, I’m not a fan of Zuckerberg or the Kochs, don’t think people that rich should exist, and certainly don’t want them having massively outsized influence over democratic elections. HTH

Moron Pilot brags about the imaginary $10k annual public pension he receives at the taxpayer expense, complains about private sector labor unions going on strike.

He’d be a hypocrite if his story were real. Instead he’s a hack troll.

My understanding is that is was based on them making cuts to keep the plants going - but in that time the CEOs and other income went up 40% without the workers getting any.  Not sure about the rest, but that's where the 40% came in I think.

10k?  Please. It was part of my compensation that was agreed to. But thanks for your contribution!

Clownshoes doesn’t realize that a police officer’s compensation is negotiated by the union. The only difference between that and UAW is that taxpayers foot the bill.

He’d be a massive hypocrite if he actually was an ex-cop.

Huh? That’s one of your more retarded statements. Is your mascara running again? Considering I was a union rep and on the contract committee…you lose.

NYC police officers have to contribute to their pensions to get half. Very few police departments do.

DETROIT – As the United Auto Workers union enters day six of targeted strikes against the Detroit automakers, General Motors President Mark Reuss is criticizing union leadership for its rhetoric and “flow of misinformation” during the ongoing contract negotiations.

Reuss, in an editorial, focused on the union’s public bashing of the company and elements of GM’s “record” contract proposal last week that included 20% pay raises and improved time off, bonuses and other benefits over the four-year term of the deal.

Standard move by employers in these situations. Try to go around the union and get enough of the employees to side with them. Technically it’s probably illegal (unfair labor practice) but if you do it correctly you won’t get in trouble
