"pump switching" scam at gas stations

1.  You scan you credit card at the pump and begin to pump your gas.
2.  A VERY aggressive thug comes up to you and orders you to allow him to pump your gas for you.
3.  if you decline, they just take the pump out of your hand nd do it anyway.
4.  when they are done, they refuse to hang up the pump and chase you off.
5.  the pump is still active on your card, so now they drive their own vehice up and get free gas paid for by your card.

 

one method to avoid this scam is to pay inside or just not get gas in shady areas.

Another way to avoid this is to use a discount that caps your gas at 20 gallons and fill up your vehicle until it stops. Some random black kid jumped out of his parents vehicle and was hassling people pumping gas for donations for some trip he was trying to earn, not criminal but annoying and I don't stop in that part of town anymore.

Also, when I pump gas I pull the trigger and it pumps itself. I would think I would be more aggressive if someone walked up to me and tried that.

You can push the flapper on the gas pump without using the nozzle. That will complete the transaction.

Also, hosing down the perpetrators with gas is the correct answer.
