Fast Food workers in CA to get $20 / hour (up $5) most in nation

Recommended Posts

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/devastating-financial-blow-mcdonald-franchisee-163000954.html

California Governor Gavin Newsom smiled as he delivered the news amid a throng of cheering workers and labor leaders. The Democratic leader had just signed into law a bill to increase wages for fast-food workers across the state.

The new AB 1228 legislation, or the Fast Food Franchisor Responsibility Act, will give fast-food employees in California the highest guaranteed base pay in the industry nationwide.

“This is a big deal,” Newsom exclaimed during a press conference in Los Angeles on Sept. 28. “What a remarkable moment.”

Meanwhile, the National Owners Association (NOA), a group that represents more than 1,000 McDonald’s franchise owners, has slammed the landmark bill for its “draconian” rules.

AB 1228 applies to fast-food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide — except for those that make and sell their own bread. The bill’s landmark change is a minimum wage hike to $20 per hour, almost $5 higher than the Golden State’s minimum wage of $15.50.

It would also see the establishment of a Fast Food Council to set wages and make recommendations for working conditions. The council has the power to increase the new minimum wage each year through 2029 up to 3.5% or the average change in the Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners, whichever is lower.

It's ridiculous and idiotic.   When 80% of those jobs disappear to automation the libs will be crying about the lost jobs.

Why the exception for those fast food chains "that make and sell their own bread?"   Does the Panera Mafia have dirt on Newsom?

I'm sure the customer service at these places will vastly improve now.

Don't forget the cries of "price gouging" when California McDonald's end up raising their prices.

They were going to disappear to automation anyway.

I'm not even in CA and this doesn't go into effect until April anyway, but Fast Food prices are already so high that I can get a cheeseburger and fries from a restaurant for carry-out or even a Steak Philly and fries for less than fast food costs!

The only people in a fast food restaurant that should be making $20hr are the security guards that are stopping the chair throwing and counter jumping by people who can’t control their anger.

Cali is pretty damn expensive.

Probably a good reason, if you're going to live there, to get an education and not expect to raise a family working at McDonalds.

I’m right though. No business is going to voluntarily pay for labor for any job they can automate.

You types always have a reason why working people shouldn’t make more $. You’ve been trained well.

No, you're not right.   They go to automation when the labor costs become excessive.  That's why for the most part they've only played with it up until now.  It's the same thing as the peach picking jobs "Americans won't do" so we have to let millions of illegals in to do.  There is plenty of automated machinery to do that job. Many countries use it.  Because we allow our borders to be overrun with people willing to do it cheaply farmers haven't gone to that equipment yet.  If we closed our borders they would.  We wouldn't be lacking for peaches cause no one would pick it.   I have no problem with working people making more, as long as that more comes from natural market forces and not being artificially inflated through poor government policy.

It’s cheaper to automate basically every repetitive low skill job than to pay for labor. Which is why fast food joints and many other businesses have moved to self ordering / checkout regardless of the minimum wage.

This is always the excuse for not paying labor more. You’ll lose your job to automation / China etc.

Yea this.  Fast food will always sell.  But I would rather pickup a burger and fries from a local bar.  Way better and basically the same cost these days.

I don't care what these people get paid otherwise.   I rarely stop at these places.  Forget automation.   When these jobs artificially get upped then they just ask the staff to do more by cutting positions.    Less service and same crappy food.   Joe and Sue get 20 an hr handing out bags of food.  Jim gets layed off.

Was talking to a liberal yesterday and they think that ALL businesses will be able to absorb this, easy peasy.

Yes, that's right, you heard that correctly: the liberal I talked to said ALL businesses should have no problem taking this on without having to lay anyone off.

For the record, this liberal has also gone on record to say that "Communism wasn't that bad and isn't any worse than Capitalism".

There are no robots on the market that have been able to fully replace humans in the peach cultivation industry due to peach orchards' unstructured environments, which includes unpredictable weather, uneven terrain, and trees' different shapes and sizes, Hu noted.

"There's no robot in the world right now that can harvest or thin peaches as well as people can," Hu said. "The technology's not quite there yet."

“We’re  not a substitute  for labor, we are a solution for the labor shortage,” says Maor. “In the future fewer people will work in picking and more will work managing the robots , analyzing the data and making decisions.”

1)  Thanks for proving my point.

2)  Peaches are about the hardest thing to harvest via machine.  Many other crops are using machines.

3)  Even as hard as peaches are, there ARE machines doing it:

4)  You're as wrong as MDC.

In both links, farmers are saying the robots are not a replacement for people, like you said they would be.

Classic strike, never will admit to being wrong.

I never said there wouldn't be humans, Pedoboy.  In fact, in my first post I specifically said the result of this law in CA would be 80% of the jobs going away, which was just a quick guestimate.  But there's no doubt that higher labor costs for menial jobs will result in more automation.   Anyone who thinks I was suggesting all jobs would be lost when I gave a specific prediction that indicated not all jobs would be lost is an idiot.  You and MDC fit the bill.

Why does this only mention fast food workers? Does every job raise to $20 as well? Like the guy chiseling mortar off of used bricks, does he make $20/hour too?

I've heard the same thing from liberals. Not one of them own a fast food business. Go figure.

You said there is plenty of machinery to pick peaches and if we got rid of the illegal pickers then farmers would use it.  That's BS, see my links.  GFY.

You think 80% of fast food jobs in CA are going away because of a $5/hour wage hike? 😂

Some members of the NY Giants might be interested in a fast food job soon. The special teams coach too.

Yeah. You should talk. How’s that Chase Claypool trade working out? They gave up what became a first round pick for that stiff.

That trade sucked. And the Bears suck. I started a whole thread on it a month or so ago. But just because that trade sucked that doesn't make paying $160M to a terrible QB any better.
