More than 800,000 people left California in 2022

LA Times editor implores ex-Californians to stop insulting the state on their way out

Los Angeles Times’ letters editor Paul Thornton implored Californians leaving the state to stop criticizing it on the way out.

"To the people leaving California: May the road rise to meet you as you seek better lives in new places. Now, can you please extend some goodwill to those of us who remain?" Thornton asked in a Saturday piece headlined, "Commentary: If you want to leave, fine. But don’t insult California on the way out."

He went on to describe how staggering numbers of Californians are fleeing to other states.

"More than 800,000 Californians moved away in 2022, and many thousands more left last year. Often, the departees, cash in hand from the sale of their $1-million bungalows, feel the need to express disdain for their home state, and even some anger too," he wrote.

Thornton went on to describe a relative of his who told him about having relocated to a small town in another state far away, but being warned against bringing "those weird California ways" to his new neighborhood.

"And which ways would those be?" Thornton asked rhetorically. "Perhaps it’s our embrace of LGBTQ+ Californians. Or it’s our liberal politics, with the state Republican Party shrunk to irrelevance after its vicious attempt in 1994 to marginalize immigrants with Proposition 187."

Proposition 187, which passed by almost 60% but blocked by the courts from ever going into effect, proposed denying state social services to illegal immigrants. Since then, California has expanded access to government benefits and services to illegal immigrants.

The Golden State started the new year by granting illegal immigrants free healthcare, despite the state's looming $68 billion deficit. This new healthcare policy will cover sex change surgeries for California residents without regard for their citizenship status.

We know that people have been escaping California for some time, so much so that they could be losing representatives in Congress.

The problem for them is that those leaving are clearly of "means" indicating that they are both smart and likely affluent, and when you are a state that relies on being a parasite for the productive to pacify the unproductive.....that is a serious problem

Bingo! If you enjoy dressing like a female hooker and twerking your ass in the faces of 5 year-olds,  please stay in California.

No crazier than super red states. I would prefer something more moderate. But man you can’t beat that coastline

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standin' until I pay my bill
Hey Don't the sun look angry through the trees?
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves?
Don't you feel like desperados under the eaves?
Heaven help the one who leaves

Oh that Warren Zevon

So I watched some highlights of the Senator debate the other night. My thoughts:

Barbara Lee Seems nice enough but too leftist for me. In the Bernie/AOC category. I could never vote for her.

Adam Schiff One of the smartest people in Congress. Honest, erudite, eloquent, certainly not a liar despite what the MAGA types think. But he’s somewhat tarnished by being unfairly portrayed by his enemies. He’d make a great senator but not my first choice.

Katie Porter My first choice. Great lady and local. Moderate, creative, pro-business and pro-women’s rights. I think she’d be outstanding. It will be tough to defeat Schiff but we’ll see.

Steve Garvey The lone Republican. Supports Trump. I don’t agree with most of what he said. But you will NEVER hear me say a bad word about Steve Garvey, one of my boyhood heroes and favorite Dodgers of all time. My folks had season tickets. I went to game 3 of the 1981 World Series- (a classic; Fernando pitched!) I mean come on now, it’s Steve FREAKING Garvey! Love him.

Thankfully they haven’t really started moving here to SC yet. Even saw that Cali has exit taxes so ppl leaving there still have to pay

The exit tax idea has been floated but I don't think they've passed it in to law yet.  It would be challenged in court for sure.

I think it has been passed. I was looking the other day and someone that let there was saying they had to pay exit taxes but it’s only if you’ve lived in Cali for a certain amount of time. Either way, you won’t ever catch me living there. Visiting? Sure. Got friends that live there plus there’s tons of nature I wanna check out

I don’t plan on moving there but I really do want to visit. Charleston in particular. Some folks say it’s the most gorgeous city in the USA. And I’m a Civil War buff so I’m anxious to see it.

Charleston is good for historic places. It is called “The Pearl of the South”. Rainbow row is pretty. Boone Hall Plantation is great & where The Notebook was filmed. I could go on & on about it since we lived there for a few years. There’s also the Angel Oak which is a MASSIVE oak tree that’s centuries old. You’d definitely have a good time if you decided to visit

Maybe Tim can tell us what the proof Schiff said he had about Russian collusion is? Schiff wont.
