California Bill Would Require New Cars Come Equipped with Speed-Limiting Device

Recommended Posts

😆 Maybe they should introduce a bill that teaches people to not shlt in the streets.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/california-bill-would-require-new-cars-come-equipped-with-speed-limiting-device/ar-BB1hcHOL?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=3fa53dc5cc8e4e25b62057a3568dcf67&ei=8

The technology, if passed under the legislation, would prevent California drivers from going 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit in any given area. The bill would mandate that cars and trucks of the 2027 model year or later that are manufactured or sold in California be installed with speed governors.

State senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat who represents San Francisco, introduced SB 961 on Wednesday to reduce the number of traffic deaths in the Bay Area and in California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“The tragic reality is that a lot of people are being severely injured or dying on our streets in San Francisco and throughout the country, and it’s getting worse,” Wiener told the Bay Area newspaper.

“We have speed limits, and they exist for a reason. And it’s perfectly reasonable to say you can’t travel more than 10 miles over the speed limit,” he added. “That’s what this bill will do. It’s very reasonable, and it’s an idea whose time has come.”

There were more than 4,400 motor-vehicle traffic fatalities in California in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. California was slightly behind Texas, which saw nearly 4,500 traffic deaths that year. The total number of traffic fatalities nationwide was 42,795, according to the NHTSA.

The National Safety Council reported that speeding played a role in 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 2021.

Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks, would be exempt from the speed-governor requirement. The California Highway Patrol, while not exempt, could obtain authorization from its commissioner to disable speed governors on their vehicles in certain circumstances, according to the bill.

“The commissioner may, in the commissioner’s discretion, authorize the disabling of an intelligent speed limiter system in any vehicle if, based on the specialized usage of the vehicle, the disabling of the system is reasonable, practical, and would not pose a risk to public safety,” the bill’s text reads.

The speed-governor requirement also states that trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds must be equipped with side guards. That would prevent cars or bikes from being pulled under a large truck in a crash.

Wiener introduced SB 961 as part of the larger SAFER California Streets legislative package, the other half of which requires the Golden State to make state-owned streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders. Under SB 960, the California Department of Transportation would be forced to improve the safety of such roads.

“Combined, SB 960 & 961 will make California roads safer for all users & lead to fewer injuries & deaths on our roads,” Wiener posted on X. “All of these strategies — speed limiters, truck side guards, smart street designs — are proven safety strategies. It’s time for California to adopt them.”

The proposal comes after California in 2022 mandated that all new cars and light trucks sold in the state must be zero-emission by 2035.

Dont forget in a few years..all cars will have to include a method to check for drunkenness.   If you're drunk, the car won't start.

I don’t know why that isn’t a thing already. I wouldn’t oppose that

It would just be yet another state inspection and fee you would have to get on your car ever year.

unfortunately, I agree, but as someone who has lost multiple people to drunk drivers, even as a libertarian I would still support it

I am not sure where I saw it or if it was true, but most are multiple time offenders, and thats just when they get caught

Sucks dude.

I have no doubt about the multpile time offenders. And for every time they get caught, they most likely drove drunk 500 times without getting caught.

This bill is nothing more than a prod to force car manufacturers to meet the states self imposed deadline for electric cars.

Newsome has often said (along with other libs) that CA leads the way when it comes to climate change. Eventually the entire nation will follow, esp if people keep voting the way that they do right now.

ALL electric is just not feasible with the current power grid structure. Can you imagine the costs of goods and services if truckers have to go electric? And how LONG it would take to get things from one state to another? Esp in winter when electric cars freeze up? Makes ZERO sense, and all you can do is follow the money.

I’d personally hate it because I drive pretty quick but I’ve always kind of wondered that as well if it’s against the law to drive that fast why do they make the cars go that fast?

One of the lasting legacies of Covid was that people started to drive like lunatics. I’m a Libertarian, but I am more than OK with states cracking down on speeding and reckless driving.

Yesterday, I was stopped at a red light, and the cross traffic light just turned green. There were three cars going from my right to left and all three of them were sitting there looking at their phones not paying attention to the light. Then their light went to yellow and the first guy in line looked up, realized he sat through the light, and gunned it through the intersection last second. The other two cars just sat there.

I would have enjoyed it if they all dropped dead on the spot. People on phones driving cars should be the next thing on the list to address.

There are rules for the autobahn, though in terms of overtaking a vehicle and how you pass them; it's kind of known and taught early for drivers.

I was on the autobahn in December, and it's fast...but also people paying attention to where they are going, etc. There are also traffic signals that DO have speed limits, but they are much higher than here in the US.

Oh my bad. Yeah I would get on board with that as well. Could save a bunch of lives. People can complain about it but hey, you’ve had your chance as a whole to not drive drunk and people do it constantly.

If they are going to make cops unable to enforce the law I’m all for it. I know, they win. But people do drive like maniacs now.
