The bill features some of the most significant border security restrictions Congress has contemplated in years. They include making it more difficult to claim asylum, vastly expanding detention capacity and effectively shutting down the border to new entrants if more than an average of 5,000 migrants per day try to cross over unlawfully in the course of a week, or more than 8,500 attempt to cross in any given day.

Even that is misleading.  The bill also says that if you're an illegal and you get 100 miles from the border or elude capture for 14 days in the U.S. you don't count towards the 5000 per day average.  So that number in reality is much larger than 5000 per day, especially if the administration decides not to catch illegals.

It isnt a W. It isnt even a deal. And it is not better than nothing. 

This literally does nothing to work the flow back from where we are. It simply makes everything they are doing now legal.

Right now they should be detaining people until hearings. They dont. They release them. That is a violation of current immigration law. This bill makes that totally ok. And even worse it makes them allowed to legally displace american workers because they get a permit day one. 

I would rather we just give ukraine and israel their money and throw the rest of this crap sandwich overboard.

Thank you, agreed. But let’s get to what’s really going on here: 

1. the bill could help Biden: 

2. the bill could hurt Trump. 

3. Congress is controlled by Republicans. 

4. Therefore the bill will not pass. 

It’s smart politics for the Democrats to attack Trump over this, and I’ll continue to do so, but in all honesty this sort of agreement NEVER happens in a Presidential election year. If you want a bipartisan deal of this sort, you need to get it done on the first year AFTER the election. That’s your window. Otherwise all of these dudes on both sides are too interested in pleasing their base to ever be willing to work with the other side, whom they have to castigate as the enemy in order to retain or grow their power. That’s our system. It kind of sucks but I’ve no idea how to fix it.
