Women’s Basketball Needs Black Stars, Not Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark is the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball. She's the biggest star in women's college basketball. She's one of the biggest stars in all of sports today.

Clark is also a white woman commanding a primarily black league. That fact troubles some members of the basketball community.

Earlier this month,  former WNBA player Sheryl Swoopes tried to undermine Clark’s legacy with a series of false statements. Swoopes said Clark has played for five years, is 25 years old, and shoots 40 times per game.

When OutKick and a few others questioned whether racial animus contributed to Swoopes’ ignorance, she cited a derivation of Critical Race Theory – saying "Black people can’t be racist."

CRT insists white people can be and are racist. Meaning, it's appropriate to label an article from USA Today on Thursday, in which a white woman penned, just that: racist.

"Women's basketball needs faces of the future to be Black," argued Lindsay Schnell. "Enter JuJu Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo."

Only white people can be raciss

About a week or two ago, I saw a video on YouTube with Jason Whitlock and a few others reacting to Sheryl Swoopes comments about Clark.  They said that Clark is a player who could bring true relevance to the WNBA, but the WNBA is likely to get in the way of that.  They discussed how her being white, straight, and religious flies in the face of the WNBA's black / LGBTQ culture and that even her own teammates would likely make things hard for her.  Looks like the media is starting to get the ball rolling on that front for them already.

It’s SAD these CULTISTS turned Elena Delle Donne lesbian.  She could have been the savior.

No one really focused on it while Kelsey Plum was in college, but I knew she had a boyfriend.  Now, I never cared about her or her relationships, but I know she was with him early in her WNBA career.  What happened after that, I don't know... but what I do know is that she started "seeing" Darren Waller in 2021 and then officially dating in 2022.  Up until 2021, she was averaging only 8+ ppg.  Enter 2021 and her FGA attempts increased (similar playing time), by like 50%.  In 2022, her playing time increased.  Weird, huh?

Curious to see how Clark's relationship with her boyfriend manifests after she gets drafted and how her dating life goes.

But remember, they don’t feel comfortable integrating…right @peenie ?

The leagues will never be black enough, ownership will never be black enough. Heck, we have to play a separate black song as an anthem before games but remember they really really want to integrate. Sure they do.

What more can we do for these people? Any suggestions?

Diana Taurasi seems to be doing okay.

Being a lesbian, she fits into the WNBA Black/LGBTQ culture... as does Breanna Stewart.

Ok so it’s not about race then

So this will repeat the following year when Paige Bueckers goes to the WNBA...  But she does have a biracial sibling, so that might keep her from this wrath...

It can be about multiple things.  But you already knew that before this troll comment.

So you're saying they're lying when they're hating on Clark in favor of the black girls... it's because she's straight?

Honestly my reply was more to you anyway.  Your post contradicted the article. IMO.  The article was basically saying they “need” a black star because there have already been a lot of white stars. So they weren’t saying Clark “wouldn’t fit” in the WNBA, they were just saying there should be a black star so it gives young black girls someone to look up to.

Which is kinda dumb because they make what, like $100k?  For how hard it is to make the WNBA, they’d be much better off focusing on school.

It's about minorities and marginalized groups whether that's race, orientation, or whatever as long as it's not straight and white.

It doesn't matter what they'd be better off doing; it's about representation.Young kids rarely think about how much they will make in a certain job or being a star or whatever. They see someone their same color or orientation and think "if they can, I can" that's what they are getting at. The representation.

As adults we know they'd be much better off going to school and doing something else, maybe playing as a hobby or a side-sport, but building. career off of it is incredibly difficult.

The USA Today article was kinda all over the place though.  At one point it says “many of the WNBA’s biggest stars have been black,” which would imply there hasn’t really been a historical problem of a lack of black stars.  I guess they were just saying more of the recent stars have been white.  But they named 2 other apparent white stars both of which I had never heard of.
