June 27 Presidential debate

Recommended Posts

This election simply again is a referendum on a personality and not policy. People are either voting for Trump because they "like him" or against him because they "hate him"

Biden didn't do anything to assuage fears that Democrats had about him and he wasn't going to win a bunch of people over to his side even if he had an extremely lucid debate last night.

Trump lied like crazy about stuff last night and at one point even said he talked to Putin after the invasion of the Ukraine and Putin told him this was "his dream." But people who like Trump don't care that he lies or will increase the debt- he "tells it like it is."

Again- this can't be the two best options we have for President. The people should rally against both parties for putting this slop forward but instead they get suckered into trading barbs pretending one person is considerably better than the other on random corners of the Internet

They did not lie anywhere close to equitably last night. But again- to people like you who are dyed in the wool it doesn't matter. You slurp what you get.

Two things to note- a poll last night said only 5% of people were changing their vote based on the debate- it didn't indicate which side the person was moving to. 14% said they were reconsidering- but obviously not changing yet. 81% said they were unchanged....so the debate did really very little damage and with the 4th coming and Trump's sentencing hearings- it won't last long in the media.

For Democrats though there might be benefit in Biden losing to clear their deck because they have a deeper bench ready to go either as early as November or in 4 years- just off the top of the head you have Newsom, Whitmer, and Shapiro. I'm not sure who is there on the Republican side and I'm not sure any of the names listed as being Trump's running mate carry the excitement for the GOP. Like losing this year might (almost) guarantee you the Presidency from 2028-2036. Winning now means almost assuredly Harris has a lead in for the nom in 2028 and I don't think she carries excitement in or out of the party.

Dont care who lied more last night, both men lie...have lied....though, I have to admit Biden's lies have been more harmful.....

So to throw out the "he lied!"  mantra only really feeds your need for something to feed your hate for the person..... its just not useful.....

Cenk makes a relieivng point. The people who control Brandon''s nonfunctional outstanding, keenly-alert brain and dignified listening pose will lose their jobs if he's replaced by somebody else so they will hopefully insulate him and encourage him to weather the storm rather than listen to the noise to replace him.

I hope. I still think this debate was way to early. Team Trump should have never agreed to debate this wonderful, fully-functional genius before the Dems officially nominated him at their convention.

Sure it is if you assign weight and magnitude to them.  For example, Biden said women around the country are being raped by their sisters.

Cenk says "there isn't a sane person alive who watched that debate and wants Joe Biden to be our candidate."

I think this needs fact checking.

I'm alive, I like to think I'm sane, and I've overjoyed doing cartwheels totally thinking with 100% certainty that Biden should be their candidate.

It’s probably safe to assume that most of that 5% was moving away from Biden (even if not voting for Trump).  If reflective of the country, isn’t that be pretty significant?

I did watch 5 minutes. I know this will be foreign to you but I read stuff about the debate and read through a transcript of the debate.

Reading is something people do where they find a story and sound out letters in patterns that form words.

I would imagine a strong portion of that 5% is moving from Biden to Trump. I would also say it's June- that can change yet.

But without breaking down the numbers fully I would say there is a good chance a 5% swing could change the election result.

You read a transcript of the debate?  That must have been interesting.  How did they fill in all of Biden's incoherent mumbling?

I watched maybe 5 minutes and saw Joe coming off as badly as I've seen him look in a debate and Trump lying through his teeth multiple times.

I thought what I've thought for the past 4 or 5 months now; "In the greatest country in the world- these two guys are the best options we can come up with for President?"

All reports say Biden came off better in the last 10-15 minutes then he did prior to that but I was watching Beverly Hills Cop II by that point.

He started as badly as possible. It was horrific.

He ended almost equally as bad, moderators were telling him “you’ve got 82 seconds left” (on a two minute answer) “is there anything you’d like to add?” And he couldn’t, because he couldn’t remember what he was supposed to say or what the issue was or probably even where he was.

But yeah, for about half an hour in the middle he was meh.

Hooray.

It was an unmitigated disaster.

Trump did lie his ass off all night and came across like a lunatic at times, so that helped, but bottom line is Biden showed he is absolutely not up for four more years. Hell he’s probably not up for today :(

More interesting that watching the debate because I didn't have to watch the debate. Ellipsis is how they filled in some things I would guess you are referring to as "incoherent mumbling." But there were also spots where they just did it verbatim. It doesn't read any better than I imagine it looked live.

I did fact check things. Trump lied on: multiple things related to January 6th, multiple things on taxes, climate change, abortion issues, Russia, Biden calling people "super predators", stuff related to migrants, "we had the greatest economy in history", the George Floyd protests.

Biden lied about insulin price caps, what Trump said about bleach, military deaths under him, and the historians calling Trump the worst president ever.

Those are the big ones I noted. I didn't get into all the little things so 9 to 4 in favor of Trump lies (with putting all the individual lies in one heading). So yeah- almost twice as many from Trump. But apparently that is "equitably" to some here.
