Trump's Campaign says they were never contacted.  It would be illegal regardless as Lorne Michaels said in the interview where he also said no candidates for President would appear on SNL before the election.

According to your article, Michaels didn’t say it would be illegal he just said it would be complicated (moreso because of third-party candidates that might request airtime).

Actually he said both.  Here is his first quote:

 I’ve been watching this non stop all day. My happiness meds kicked in along with a thirty pack of Natural Ice 5.9s. No, he did not say it was illegal. You’re adding words that aren’t there.  The fact that they filed the notice with the FCC and gave Trump airtime during NASCAR suggests to me they followed the law.

It was hypocritical of Michaels to say he wasn’t planning on having either candidate on and then do it anyway, but I’d be surprised if it’s determined that a law was broken.
