Ā

Just 0.2% of US border fentanyl seizures are at the Canadian border

Trump has lumped together the Canadian border and the Mexican border when talking about illegal fentanyl imports. The day after his inauguration in January, for example, heĀ said, ā€œThe fentanyl coming through Canada is massive. The fentanyl coming through Mexico is massive.ā€

But there is a massive difference between the extent of the problem at the two borders.

Federal statisticsĀ showĀ US border authorities seized 21,889 pounds of fentanyl in the 2024 fiscal year. Of that amount, 43 pounds were seized at the Canadian border — about 0.2% — compared with 21,148 pounds at the Mexican border, about 96.6%.

There’s no indication of any substantial change in the first three months of the 2025 fiscal year (October 2024 through December 2024). Of the 4,537 pounds of fentanyl seized by US border authorities during that period, 10 pounds, about 0.2%, were seized at the Canadian border, while 4,409 pounds, about 97.2%, were seized at the Mexican border.

It is true that the quantity of fentanyl seized at the Canadian border increased in fiscal year 2024. Just 2 pounds were seized there in fiscal year 2023, and 14 pounds were seized in fiscal year 2022. And, of course, even tiny quantities of fentanyl can be fatal.

Still, the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s 2024 National Drug Threat AssessmentĀ reportĀ did not even use the word ā€œCanada.ā€ It mentioned Mexico 86 times.

The European Union has decided to lower tariffs on American car imports as a strategic move to prevent a trade war with the United States.

It will decrease the rate from 10% to 2.5%, per FT. Winning.

This is very good news. If Trump is ultimately responsible for actually lowering tariffs more power to him (on this issue.)Ā

More tariffs today:Ā

https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/10/economy/tariffs-trump-explained/index.html

Tariffs are bad. Tariffs hurt the economy. Trump’s method of suddenly announcing them also hurts the economy because it creates uncertainty.Ā

On the other hand, I will concede that if the threat of tariffs actually ends up creating less tariffs and better trade conditions for us, then this could end up being a good thing. But I’m not convinced that this is the case. Guess we will find out one way or the other.Ā

I absolutely 100% believe that retaliatory tariffs against those that levy tariffs against us is the right move.Ā  We stand around like dopes while the rest of the frickin world protects their own and the minute we try to do the same thing, we get labeled as the bad guys.

What difference does any of this make (eg who the good guys and bad guys are) if prices go up as a result of the tariffs?Ā

I get this and this was more or less my position when Biden was ramping up inflation.Ā  Now, for all the grief I give Biden about his mistakes I have to admit that while he sought to eradicate most of Trumps policies, he did keep the tariffs and never changed them, and I think that was a rather smart move.

In order to fix our issues, this is the way, there is no magic way to fix things without some effort.Ā  We are here, cannot undo the past, the pain that built up over the last four years will now have to be wrung out......it sucks, but this is all part of the medicine.

Well...You are assuming, of course, that all the world's tariffs stay in place.Ā  Maybe they will, maybe they won't.Ā  Ā Let's not for a minute think the world craves and in many cases needsĀ the USA as a place to market their products.

If the world wants to market here to keep their business afloat they have three choices.Ā  1) Do nothing and take the chance and have to compete against countriesĀ with no tariffs on price. 2) Put pressure on their local governments to drop or lower their tariffs or 3) Drop their prices 10% to offset the tariff costs.Ā  Ā

I for one am willing to pay a little more to support retaliatory tariffs.Ā  I think it's important.Ā  You keep talking about free trade free trade, but only the US.Ā  You seem like you don't care about other countries levying them on us.Ā  We will never ever get to a free trade situation if one country can levy them with no repercussions.Ā  Ā

You’re right to an extent. I want free trade from the USA no matter what other nations do. I think it hurts us to do otherwise. I don’t believe the other nations will give in, and change their habits; history has shown they will only retaliate more. In any case I don’t want to punish the American consumer. You may be willing to pay more but too many businesses are hurt that way.Ā

You mean the European Union. And they may have had other reasons for doing it. Still if it continues I will absolutely concede that this was a good move by Trump. Lower tariffs, more free trade is a good thing and however we get there I’m all for it. But as of now I’m not convinced. If you listen to Trump talk on this subject it’s pretty clear that he does not regard tariffs as a means to eliminate or lower other tariffs.Ā

I don’t care if they were lying before or hypocritical or whatever. I know I wasn’t. I said then and I will repeat now: tariffs are bad. Trump’s tariffs in 2017 were awful. Biden’s tariffs in 2021 were just as bad. The new tariffs will be far worse than any before since 1930.Ā

We will have to agree to disagree on the value of tariffs.
