LIBERATION DAY: 90 day pause on all tariffs except China

Higher prices on those poorly made products negates the one benefit they had, their cheap price.  If you take away the one advantage they've had over other products then there is no reason to purchase them anymore.  We all have other options to buy, what option does China have?

This isn't necessarily true because even if something is made in the US it may be made with foreign products so the prices go up because the tariff is now there affecting the process of making the product.

Additionally- some producers have said even with a tariff the product is still cheaper to make overseas and then ship it in.

The bigger issue we have as a country is for decades we refused to advance how and what we make here. And thus we became too independent on foreign countries and goods. Tariffs don't unring that bell.

China. Doesn’t. Pay. The. Tariff.

It’s an ad valorum tax paid by consumers who shop at places that tend to sell Chinese goods & produce. Yaknow, maga voters.

What are you?  A moron?  Of course China doesn't pay the tariffs but if he an Xi were such "great pals" as you assert, why the f@ck would he put ANY tariffs on China?

C'mon, Saints.  You can't be this obtuse.  Seriously, you used to be one of the good posters and you've completely done a 180 and turned into a raging liberal lunatic.  I can't believe one man has done this to you.  Come back to the light and forces of good.  We'll welcome you back with open arms.

You're not wrong.  We have been far too dependent on China.  How and when do we start changing that?  Maybe this is the start.

I think this is the wrong place to start and it's attacking the effect and not the cause. I know people don't want to acknowledge it but this is something that you most likely need a good decade plus to address because the solutions will get politicized by both sides and destroy any actionable moves.

Like as a hypothetical. For years there has been this push to green energy (solar, wind, etc). The Democrats stupidly tried to build in incentives to switching to it all which led to Republicans pushing back on it. The Republican answer is what happened the other day where we are signing executive orders to expand the mining and use of coal. Why? Coal accounted for 40% of total electricity in 2011, it accounted for 16% in 2016. It is a dying energy usage- doesn't mean you ignore it completely, but don't pander to it.

If we really wanted to see energy and oil prices drop we could continue using it but also allow the market to dictate what companies establish as far as some of the other ideas of energy and then we put the US muscle behind it and we'd dominate the world in energy production. But no- it got politicized into oblivion by everyone.

Similar deal here- we have hands on jobs we need workers for, but we also need more jobs and money and investment in semiconductors and computer chips and stuff like that. But that requires schooling and money and those things are politicized now because the politician jagoffs have turned college vs non-college against each other.

To circle back- tariffs don't address the problem. They address the aftereffects. It would mean so much more if we could look at China 10 years from now and say "Guess what- we don't need your sh!t...we make it here."

China has said they have raised tariffs high enough to effectively halt trade.  At this point if the US goes higher they will not.

This gives Trump an out to claim victory and remove them all.

They are very smart.

Look.   I am not a giant fan of the tariffs--outside of reciprocal ones.   I also am taking a wait and see approach.   Unlike so many, I am not doing anything with my 401k or my investments.  I think it's dumb to do so.

Additionally however, if anyone believes China can win a trade war with the US long term, you're insane.  A long term tariff battle against the US will destroy their economy.  Now I know Timmy will come in here and say it will destroy the US as well, but nope.  They need us way more than we need them.

No Im not going to disagree with you. I agree with your assessment. And I don’t think it will destroy us. But it will be painful. But yes they need us more than we need them.

But Xi is also right: there will be no winners here. We will not gain from this. Unless you think the ultimate result will be a happy, free and prosperous China trading honestly with us without trade barriers. Sure that would be a great outcome but I don’t  see that as a possibility. Much more likely  is a pissed off and resentful China looking to lash out and fock us at every opportunity. And I don’t want that.

What I think a lot of you guys fail to realize  is that despite China’s tariffs, despite the trade imbalance, despite their theft of AI, our trade with them has been incredibly great for us. We have profited immensely, It has helped made us the richest nation on Earth. It’s been a huge win. Sure it could be improved but do we really want to risk killing the golden goose? I don’t.

Bloomberg reports Trump has reached out to China for a Trump-Xi phone call. Inevitably.

My guess it goes along the lines of his phone call in 2017 to the President of Mexico where he begged him to say that Mexico would pay for the wall, so he could claim a win.

Exactly why do you think China wouldn't win a trade war with the US, they need us more than we need them. We can't make products as cheaply as they can. The U.S. amounts to less than 15% of their exports total.  I don't think their citizens will suffer the loss of goods from the US as much as we will from them. And even if the Chinese population did suffer, their govt. is less likely to be moved by it than the US govt.

So what advantages does the US have in this war and negotiations?

Whether pissed off or simply following a one hundred year plan China has looked to fock us at every opportunity.  They pirate tech and intellectual property, they incessantly spy on us and infiltrate our infrastucture computer systems.  They flood markets and dump products made with slave and child labor as they manipulate currency. When nixon went to China we envisioned a market opening to our goods.  Waht we got is our market open to their goods and their investigation of our markets so they could rip them off.  Do i want trump trying to get into a measuring contest with Xi?  I do not.  Stormy Daniels has alreaady told us the result of that contest.  I do not want us to aggrevate the world's new superpower.  I would prefer we engatgge in dialog.  Sadly, China always engages in dialog, but then they do whatever they damn well please following their hundred year plan.  They apprecaite that the winds of change are always blowing in america.  they simply weather any storms.

China’s government owned real estate is in big trouble. Was before the Trade war. DJT knows this.  It’s 2008 over there.

China funded the Penn Biden center at U Penn. Hunter also made a shitload of money from China after Daddy took him there on a tax payer funded field trip.  Xi misses Biden.

But you’re still ignoring the fact that they DO buy a lot of our goods. Sure, it’s not nearly as much as we buy of theirs. But it’s enough to make us a whole lot of money. Our relationship with them has been quite prosperous. I just don’t see the logic in blowing it up.

I’m not surprised to read this crap from the usual trolls but I am surprised to read it from you. There’s not a single person here who is “siding with China”. That’s a lot of crap. Many of us just don’t think a trade war is the right way to deal with China; it’s not to our benefit.

It’s like you didn’t comprehend anything I just wrote. So let me make it simple for you:

1. Yes China is screwing us around.
2. We’re making a lot of money anyhow, too much money to blow it all up even though they’re screwing us around.

Is that simple enough for you?

Yes the rust belt has lost money. But you can’t deny that overall the USA profited. It’s been a net gain.

The Rust belt is gone forever.   It's not coming back.  We don't want it back. That was over 30 years ago.  Technology has evolved.  We have almost 500k manufacturing jobs right now that can't be filled.  We need to move forward.

What an ignorant comment.  I guess Mexico doesn’t make anything we once made and sell it here now.
