LIBERATION DAY: 90 day pause on all tariffs except China

Also, knowing that China is the largest contributor to climate change/greenhouse gases really just amazes me. Sure, they've promised to be better by 2060...but still. Come on.

No one is changing their daily lives for a greater change in todays world.  Its that simple.  Some people virtue signal much more than others.  Not a riddle.  We know who.  At least others are real with it.

I live amongst a pretty split lib vs conservative area.   More conservative but they mostly arent hard right.  And the Libs are actually sorta normal.  Its not a strawman, just my experience.  But thr Libs I know pound for pound cant go without an amazon box on their front step.  Cant go without a water bottle (we recycle here but F if they do).  Libs I find need "things".  Much more needy.  If they have to go out of their way a little, its off the table.  And yes they always have a brand new phone because thats super important to them.  I keep my phone until it breaks/I lose it/ or it just cant function.  As long as I have internet and can text/call im fine.

Just my experience but I can safely say the Libs I know leave a larger footprint than conservatives I know, as a whole.

No, if I did I'd be printing money investing appropriately.

If there is one common theme in Trump's actions, it can be summarized as:  the US is done being your biotch, now kiss the ring.  I imagine he hoped his tariffs would be some sort of magic solution, but they weren't (in the short term anyway), and he listened to people to pull them back.  But he has put the world on notice that we are changing the way we do trade.  Much like he told Europe we're done paying for your defense, and when Zelensky acted indignant at that meeting, Trump and Vance put him in his place, and now he seems more than willing to play ball.

I have long hated how places like Europe were "second handers" (to borrow an Atlas Shrugged phrase), glomming off on us for defense and antiquated post-WWII tariff deals, while looking down their nose at us.  Trump is changing that.  It's OK to step out of your troll persona and enjoy it, MDC.

“Second handers” is a phrase from The Fountainhead, not Atlas Shrugged, gb.

You should have said you've been buying all the way down knowing that the market will eventually go up like it always does.

- It's a good thing for those who've been planning to take advantage.  Note: I think that's investors like you and I minus your TDS.

- It's a bad thing for the panican sellers that missed getting back in.  Note: That's investors like Psychic.

- For regular dopes that have things on auto pilot it's just a bump in the road that won't matter at all in the long run.

I'm talking about just the market, you might be mixing in the price of eggs or something stupid.

And let's talk about the fiasco for a minute. Trump doesn't have a gun to the head of the panic sellers making them sell.  The same ones that jump right back in when the news cycle changes. They're creating the fiasco.  They're giving up gains to smarter investors.  There are a whole bunch of investors that sold at the bottom and scratched and clawed trying to get back in when the news changed. They didn't have to do that.  And they cost themselves by doing that.

And yes I know its a bunch of chit investment firms are doing the exact same thing.

Thats what I said. Pretty sure you were the one that asked what I was doing a couple days ago.

My point is this is a separate issue than how poorly this has been executed by Team Trump. Total fiasco.

But a question: if the point of the tariffs was to create pressure in order to get other nations to agree to new deals, then why relieve the pressure before any deals are done or even negotiated?

Don't think he realized the markets would react so severely, so he pumped the brakes.

The 10% tariffs are still terrible for the economy along with the 25% on autos .... however, I will say I don't mind as much the tariff war with China. They break trade agreements, manipulate currency, and blatantly steal intellectual property.  They've never played on a level playing field.  The entire world should've stopped trading with them decades ago.

So you agree that those investments have nothing to do with the tariffs correct?

They do. They knew ahead of time this would happen so they got in front of it. Maybe not every single dollar was because of the tariffs, but much of it was.

Maybe. But the problem is that they’re our third largest trading partner. We can’t start a trade war with them without tremendous disruption. Is it worth it to us to do that anyhow because (a) they’ve been so unfair and (b) it might convince them to change their ways? Some folks would argue yes, but I’m not one of them. I don’t think we gain.

The basic question is are we ok with them selling us products from ripped off IP cheaper than anyone else can make it?  Some of that cost is due to labor savings, but a lot is due to the fact that they steal IP at will and without repercussions.  You're right it will have disruption to us, and maybe there's a more gentle way to maneuver into it, but we need to be very very hesitant to leave any of our critical supply chains in China.

No they didn't know ahead of time what would happen.  No one knew.  Business don't make him decisions.  And the tariffs are now paused and no one knows what is going to happen next.  You're being very dishonest with reality and facts.

I’m convinced that there’s going to be some kind of deal coming with China, or at the very least a de-escalation. China is our third largest trading partner. Too much money is on the line. In a week, possibly two, possibly less…this will be resolved.

I’m much more optimistic than I was this morning. Somebody smart got into Trump’s ear, told him he had to cave, and he did.

It's not called caving. It's called the art of negotiation.

Liberals, you keep showing your hand here. Moderates see the way you freak out, and then are wrong time and time again. Then they see how you rationalize your wrongness away.

You need to get to a point of realizing Trump does things that are good for this country. It's OK to admit that as a liberal. Become a moderate at least. Realize your party is the real problem.

As a moderate I will say- yes obviously I see the way Real Tim freaks out here over everything and it's silly.

I also see the MAGA mooks on here who will never admit Trump made a mistake on something and that is equally silly.

I don’t think it’s about money.  Beta soy boys hate Trump because guys like Trump hit them in the head too many times in gym dodgeball in their formative years, drove the cool car, picked up all the hot chicks, and got the best grades.  It’s rooted in their jealousy and insecurity.  Many psychologists have dubbed this the “William Zabka Effect.”

I for one applaud Trump for changing course almost immediately. Looks like someone in the WH told Weathervane Don how stupid his policy was and sent him back to the golf course.

Anonymous staffer, we salute you. 🫡

It's more telling that in MAGA land, the bullies and nepo babies are celebrated. And their insecurities, as well.
