Tim Walz Drops Bid for Third Term and Amy Klobuchar May Run Instead

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota said on Monday that he was abandoning his bid for re-election to a third term, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, a fellow Democrat, is considering seeking the office, two people briefed on conversations between the two politicians said.

Mr. Walz and Ms. Klobuchar met on Sunday in Minnesota, where he informed her of his plans and she confirmed her interest in running to succeed him. For Mr. Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president in the 2024 election, the departure caps a brief rise in national politics.

Mr. Walz said a widening scandal over fraud in social services programs in Minnesota had persuaded him to drop out of the race. Mr. Walz had been criticized for his administration’s oversight of the programs, and its failure to prevent widespread fraud.

“I came to the conclusion that I can’t give a political campaign my all,” Mr. Walz said in a statement. “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and the cynics who prey on our differences.”

Mr. Walz has scheduled a news conference on Monday where he is expected to discuss his decision.

Ms. Klobuchar did not respond to requests for comment on Monday morning.

Good. Walz's time is over. His admin's lack of oversight and the DFL's cowardice in choosing to ignore the warning signs for fear of being labeled as racists deservedly took him down.

Klobuchar should stay in the Senate where IMO she is more valuable as a bulwark against the current admin, but she would make a fine governor. Or POTUS, for that matter.

Al Franken

Really? Al Franken was fine, he just took a really stupid photo and the Dems drummed him out of congress for it. If only the Republicans had standards remotely close! Or any standards at all...

Only 8? And no kids? He’ll never make the GOP presidential ticket at this rate.

No issue with Klobuchar so far.  Looks 10x better than this current clown on the surface.

Sure. And he was removed from Congress for these horrible transgressions. Meanwhile Republicans went ahead and re-elected a seditious mob bossStandards. The GOP has none.

This is the Minnesota thread though. Franken was not removed, he stepped down after all the other women came out.

Omar also paid her husband's company 2.7 million last election cycle.

Let's not pretend there are any "standards" by either side in politics. Politics is and will always be a dirty business.

To be clear, Franken stepped down due to pressure exerted on him from his own side of the aisle.

My understanding is that IF Omar paid her husband's company (I have not followed the story) it was for services rendered and was perfectly legal, though incredibly shady. In times before Trump it may have ended her political career. But now this is all acceptable graft, and the mere appearance of impropriety can properly be responded to with something like "meh- Omar Derangement Syndrome!"

Did I do that right? I'm not used to dismissing important stories that way, it feels shitty.

Let's not forget that the first time Trump was elected, not only did the Dems lose their minds, but the Reps did also. The money behind them all was pissed that they didn't get one of theirs in office and was asking, "How did this happen? Fix it!. The Reps only jumped on board with Trump when they realized it was the only way to get re-elected. They are all whores on both sides.

Klobuchar lacks the charisma to become POTUS but she seems like she'd be a good leader.  Minnesota has shown they don't care about charisma (Tim Walz), so that's in her favor.  The question is if Omar and the Somali mafia think she'll play ball with them.

Sadly you are right about Klobuchar's complete lack of charismatic presence. She would be an excellent POTUS or governor.

I think you're grossly overestimating the sway of Omar and her constituency. If not in the past, then hopefully moving forward, at least. I'd LIKE to think the MN DFL learned their lesson, but I don't see many pols learning good lessons lately. Just a lot of a-holes deciding that emulating the Don is their best path, even when they are diametrically opposed to him. See: Newsome, Gavin.

Whatever she lacks Klobucher is still a huge upgrade over Waltz.

Ever wonder why Kamala chose Walz of all people?
