Seriously why do people camp out for the new iphone NOW when its a week away?

Recommended Posts

Ok ill say that ive been to tons of midnight release movies and video game launches. IU understand the appeal of getting it asap. But people are lining up to buy the new iphone 6 when its a week til sale. Heres the part that gets me...I will also get the new iphone 6, I am excited for it. But I will simply preorder it tomorrow, then walk into the store on release day and pick it up like iv done with every other gadget iv preordered. I could mayyyybe understand the pop culture appeal if only those people got it and other waited months. But I will have it an hour after they do.

Seriously sitiing on a sifdewalk for a wekk is like a prison sentence to me and id probably die of boredom. theres zero purpose or functionality to it when you can just preorder and get it on release day. Im baffled.

P.S, this thread is not a place for you to express your "trendy" disdain for apple products. We get it, your cooler, you win.

I'm with you on waiting any length of time in a line when rapid wait-free alternatives exist. But at the risk of violating the statement above, why buy any brand new technology? Isn't it better to wait a bit until the kinks are worked out, or longer until a competitor improves upon the concept/offers a similar product for cheaper? I can understand waiting in line for movie and video game releases better.

What is revolutionary about the new iPhone anyway?

Disclaimer: I don't have a smart phone, and can't even wait for an elevator most of the time.

I don't get how crazy people get whenever Apple reveals a new phone. I live in the Bay Area and see the madness in front of Apple stores. The only good thing about yesterday's announcement was U2 performing. I too don't have a smart phone. I have a laptop with a large screen for what the phone can't do. While bells and whistles technology is cool, it's not enough for me to spend money on what I can get with my current set up just fine.

Its because they want to be seen in their skinny jeans, black-rimmed glasses, and wool scarves.

Same reason most even want an iPhone over others....because people see it as "cool".

Not knocking iPhones with this...(I am possibly going to get the 6 after being on Android for the past 4 years and enjoy our other apple products) but many people get them just because of it being Apple and they have to be "first" or say they were "first" rather than wait a week to get it (as if getting it on that day means anything).

I camped out for Stones tickets once. It was only eighteen hours. I got laid which in turn gave me crabs. Great tickets and a good show. Well worth the waiting.

I camped out for Wimbledon tickets with my wife. They had a decent field where camping was allowed, and people made it an "event" by socializing, throwing frisbee, kicking soccer balls, cooking out, etc. It was pretty fun, and the only way to buy quarterfinal tickets for face value.

In addition to being stylish, Apple products also tend to be more intuitive/user friendly than competitors.

Meh...never had an issue with my HTC EVO (other than battery life) or my GSIII.

I think they make some things easy...some things are extremely stupid in how they are used...but people have been told they are more intuitive and people believe it.

Put a "back" button on iPhone, and a similar way to list all the apps as Android has...and it would be a no-brainer for me. To this point...my wife's phones don't do things as easy as my GSIII does.

I was all set to get the 5...went in and messed with it and the GSIII and the GSIII blew it away in terms of ease of use.

I think simple tasks are easy on the iPhones and they appeal to that (stupid people and women who need to have the trendy thing that is easy to use)

You're probably right. I should shut up as I don't even know how to use an iPhone, let alone compare its functionality to other smart phones. But my wife likes hers, and Apple lap tops are generally friendlier, except for the absence of a right click button. :dunno:

You should be able to enable right click on your Mac under system preferences.

Probably depends on what you/she or anyone is used to.

At this point...I am pretty used to how everything on Android works...to going to an iPhone to me is not intuitive at all.

For my wife, it has worked well.

I dunno, part of it's probably just for the atmosphere of it all. Good way to meet easy going chicks, etc. Thing is you'd almost have to be a loser with no job to be able to do this, so I guess this is where you meet other people who aren't so hung up on the "so what is it you do?" thing

Too bad the batteries on all of their Apple products will die while they are in line. Hopefully someone brings a Galaxy S5 with ultra battery saver mode, for emergencies and all.

people are focking losers in general.

if anyone waits in a line for a week for anything......there should be a focking guillotine awaiting at the end of it for the stupid focks.

So it's worse then a flip phone. At least it's not a fax line.

Also, if (when) I get a smart phone, I guarantee you I will not ever text. Dumb dumb dumb.

My older friends said the exact same thing when they switched to a smart phone. A buddy told me he was going to get the plan with 200 texts. I told him he better go unlimited. As soon as people found out, they stopped calling and started texting. He prefers texting now also.

People waiting in line already are being paid to wait in line.

I felt the same way, but I text about half the time I use the phone now. It is pretty annoying if you are trying to discuss anything remotely complicated, but good for quick interactions.

I also tend to turn my phone off for extended periods. Any of my friends under 40 freak out at the concept of not having a cell phone on my person at all times. People have convinced themselves that they must be available by phone 100% of the time, lest you miss some crisis that invariably will occur to those you care about.

What do your friends think about you not having a cell at all?

Also good when you need to ask a question to a group. Sure, I could call all 20 managers in the division to ask, but it would take an hour. A text takes seconds.

This is true. But texting is horrific while driving and rude to just about everyone when checking/responding to texts interrupts actual human interactions.

On balance, I think texting has a negative impact on society.

Do you have a laptop with a trackpad or an iMac with a mouse?

edit: This will tell you how to set up either.

Laptop. Admittedly, I didn't try very hard, but that site isn't user friendly for someone who isn'y computer savvy. Easier to google "activating right click on macbook pro". But thanks anyway, as I didn't know this option even existed.

I don't know why it didn't link to the actual page. Weird...

Anyhow, Just go under preferences, click on trackpad, select secondary tap, and from there you shoould be able to enable either bottom left or bottom right corner.

Actually texting usually gets a faster response than calling. Since every phone has caller ID, nobody answers anymore. They're busy and think "meh, I'll call him back when I get a chance." I'm guilty of that too. But with a quick text, you usually get a response in less than a minute.

I hate talking on the phone unless it's important. Otherwise, text is king! You can respond asap or when you like! Love it!
