Trump threatens to close 'Southern Border entirely

Recommended Posts

It is more than that. You have to factor in things like promoting the common welfare of the people. This is an overly simplistic view of what a society should be and what a government (and taxes) should promote.

Now, if you want to say that we have bloat in the budget in so many areas that $5b pales in comparison, I won't argue there. We have waste all over the place.

I would argue that spending $5b on portions of a wall (let's not fool ourselves into thinking that $5b gives us a complete wall) is probably not the best use of money. I would also argue that spending $5b on immigration reform is money well spent, though. The debate is what those improvements would look like and holding fast to an actual wall is one of the reasons that some of the Dems are digging in and some Reps are not totally on board.

Well, the point was to dumb it down. So yes, of course it's simplistic. That was the point.

So disagreeing on how to spend the less than one half of one percent of the Budget on Border Security is worth a Shutdown of the whole thing? Really? Trump won the election. The House passed the budget.

I thought Trump shut the government down. At least he said he did. I do think that he is holding onto this wall thing a little too hard and not really coming up with a realistic set of changes to address the immigration problem, but I can see why he is holding onto this as long as he can (he needs to save face).

I also thought the entire thing is not shut down, just non-essential areas.

I've never been a border patrol agent, but I have heard a few interviews with some agents that say a physical barrier is a must on the southern border.

My opinion on all of this is to lock down the borders for some time and let's then let's focus on the people that are here already. We have cities in this country that are going broke. We have an alarming rate of murders, theft, rape, fake rape, etc...

And yes, only a portion of the government is shut down.

Call it whatever you want, I don't care, I'm not getting in a semantics argument.

What I do know is the House passed a Budget for this year that started 8 days ago. The President said he will sign it. Yet it's sitting in the Senate because they "disagree" that portions of a wall on our southern border aren't the best way for immigration border security. It's one half of one percent of the Budget.

Pass the GD thing and move on.

Win the next election, or Win the house. Then create your own Budget. Just like you did all the years under the previous administration that was eventually passed.

Trump had 2 years with Republicans controlling both the Senate and the House. Why did he wait until Democrats gained control of the House to get so desperate to address this "crisis"?

It feels like many of you are being played.

Yup

The 2019 Budget was passed by the 2018 House dummy.

We're talking about this years budget not 2020's.

I guess I missed the part where the House actually passed a budget. I know they passed a temporary funding resolution in late December that had $5b for the wall, but not a full budget as far as I could tell. Maybe you have some other info that I can't find.

BTW - one side of Congress passes stuff all the time that the other side won't, so this is not uncommon. I think a budget approved on time is rare these days.

But the Republican Senate said no. :dunno:

Because you need more than 51 votes to pass it. A simple majority doesn't do it.

Gah.

You don’t seem to understand anything. This is not R vs D but the Establishment vs Trump. You trust and believe the establishment and I feel the Estabishment is ruining this country.

The establishment is trying to keep Trump from enacting his crazy outside the box ideas, like tax cuts and corporate deregulation.

Hes a rebel, that one.

Note:

The Establishment is heretofore defined as anybody who disagrees with or thinks Trump's an idiot.

Most of trumps cabinet selections have been corporate lobbyists, CEOs, and lifers. But yeah, they're not the establishment.😁 Until they quit and then they're the worst people in the world. THEN They're part of the swamp. The deep dark State. LOL

Gah.

The Senate voted on 4 immigration different immigration proposals last year. Two of them included $25B for the wall. The one pushed by The White House failed 39-60. I believe it was a 51-49 Republican senate, so do the math.

Let’s just accept things will only get wackier and stay that way til election time where he will no doubt get ousted. Then we can go back to a normal president who does nothing, says lots of canned politically correct things and lets the deep state run the country according to their agendas per usual.

It takes 60 votes to pass it, regardless of your political affiliation. A simple majority of 51 yays (out of 100) Senators can't pass it. That's your civics lesson for the day.

I don't care who "isn't" voting for this budget based on a mere 5B for border security. It's one half of one percent of the budget. All the Dems and the few R's or L's that aren't are doing it for political reasons. Because 5B is peanuts in a Trillion Dollar budget.

What if I told you that out of the 5.9 Billion in the Budget for "The Wall" that's really all split out between..... yes a physical wall in certain places. But its also provisioned for updating broken fencing or building infrastructure like bridges to help Border Agents in their jobs. A portion is also provisioned to simply add more border agents.

Trump calls it "The Wall" so he can beat his chest and say he is "Winning!@#!" and that he "Keeps his promises!@#!"

The Pelosi and Shumer Dems are calling it "The Wall" so they can call it immoral and an outrage!@#! so they can keep Trump from winning these weird political points, and maybe some for themselves.

It's all a Washington game.........and you scmucks sit here all day arguing about it.

But in the end, the 5.9B makes sense. If you just look at the budget on face value. And its ridiculous to not pass it on this one thing and this alone.

Yes of course, but Trump and most of the yahoos in this thread are implying it is a Right vs Left issue and the Democrats won't give him his wall.....Lets be practical and just do the math. If the Senate voted 60-39 against, that means 11 Republicans voted No. To overcome that, 43% of Democrats would have had to vote yes.

If it is the right thing to do, then so be it, but we clearly aren't there yet.

If Trump can manage to stick to a script for 7 minutes, he'll be okay. If he loses it and starts going all Minnesota campaign rally on us, he's done.

apparently, the new tactic out of the white house, since you know, lying didn't work, The new tactic is to say the word crisis as many times in one minute as you possibly can.

The only problem with that is the net numbers are significantly down from even a few years ago. So if it wasn't a crisis then how the hell can it be a crisis now? And why is it a crisis suddenly now?

Here's a thought. Stop with the buzz words and the bullshit. Make the case on the facts alone. Walls stop things. That's a pretty easy sales pitch.

as it stands right now, between the buzz words, the bullshiit, and the shut down, Trump couldn't sell insulin to a diabetic.

Shii, I've already said repeatedly I'm not opposed to the wall.

But it doesn't matter how useful or necessary something is, if you're selling it and packing it in bullshiit, people aren't buying.

Between the bombast and the bullshiit, a perfectly reasonable discussion at least has turned into a freaking shut down.

Trump doesn't care about the wall as much as he cares about the fight. On the flip side, pelosi is trying to prove that she's got bigger onions than he does. So now it's just a chest-thumping exercise.

For somebody who says he's the world's best salesman, his personal unlike-ability, untrustworthiness and his horrid tactics aren't doing him any favors that's for sure.

Im with Wiffle on this. I wouldnt particularly care about a wall getting built if it were part of an honest discussion about the price and other tactics for reducing illegal immigration. Since it is purely a grandstanding stunt by Trump, I cant blame Pelosi et al for telling him to GFH.

Ive mentioned this article from Cato before. It is really worth reading:

Wait, hold on here.

So you and MDC aren't against "The Wall" per se, which is 5.9 Billion in the 2019 Budget going to Walls, more border agents, and other infrastructure to curtail illegal immigration. You are just against how it's sold? The branding of it?

They aren't "selling" it well so its okay to hold up the budget being passed based on you not liking how its branded even though the actual factual line item is okay.

Wow.

I bet you buy socks and jogging pants at Nordstrom too. They got cool commercials.

Why do Democrats want so many illegals in our country? Why does Diblasio want to use my tax dollars for illegals' healthcare?

Because Trump doesn't. And they like to enable chaos to give reason for massive government control.

Let me help you with your reading skills. Make a real case for it, have a real discussion about border security and the walls part of it fine, whatever. But remember when they sold us the Iraq War because of WAH terrorist? Now they're trying to sell us the wall because of WAH terrorists?

It's obvious that Trump doesn't give a about the wall. Who gives a about the fight about the wall. otherwise, why didn't you get it done in the last 2 years? Why is it suddenly a crisis?

- when the Dems own the house?

I mean that part is so obvious it's not even funny. If youre half smart enough to ask the right questions. Which you're obviously not.
