RicemanX 20 Posted April 12, 2006 I'm DJing for this fraternity's alumni dinner. Bunch of guys 30 - 40 years old there. What type of music should I play so they will dance?
Concrete Charlie 0 Posted April 12, 2006 the kind that's 86 proof Seriously, get them buzzed enough and they'll dance to anything popular won't they?
NewbieJr 540 Posted April 12, 2006 Take it from me, I DJ 20 and 25 year reunions on a regular basis, these songs work everytime: The DJ Classics: Funkytown, December 1963 (Oh What a Night), Some Kind of Wonderful, ect. (you know the ones....songs you'd never listen to alone, but they're great for getting folks on the dancefloor) 80's Classics: I Melt With You, Our Lips Are Sealed, Tainted Love, ect. and don't make the mistake of thinking that because they're not 21 years old they don't like current stuff. Yeah, Hot in Here, Hollaback Girl, My Humps, Pon De Replay are all examples of songs from teh last five years that people of all ages will dance to.
Electric Mayhem 35 Posted April 12, 2006 I'm 34, and I think pretty much anything would work, if people feel like dancing the music won't really matter to much. BUT You should try to throw in some stuff that may remind them of younger days, like Tone Loc, Bust a Move, etc. Me personally? When I'm in a dance club (not too frequently now a days), i like the newer songs like Gold Digger and other stuff that has a good beat to it.

Brown Eyed Girl 1 Posted April 12, 2006 I love to dance to almost anything, but here's some good ones: (mostly 70's dance) 1) Play That Funky Music 2) Wild Thing (Ton Loc) 3) Got to be Real (Cheryl Lynn) 4) Jive Talkin (Bee Gees) 5) Get Down Tonight (KC) 6) Love Hangover (good sexy semi-slow song!) 7) Groove Line (Heatwave) :also

Wild Thing was out in 89, should be a hit. Also "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C&C Music Factory (proud to say I had to google it.) Also Prince and Madonna (earlier stuff). Also Shout, since it is a fraternity thing.

Nothing more fun to watch than a bunch of fat drunk guys in suits laying on their back and shaking around during the "little bit softer now" part.

OD99 0 Posted June 24, 2008 Really depends on the crowd - a bunch of frat guys may not want to dance regardless but if you are trying to get people going I would suggest the "classic rap/dance songs" 1. Bust a move - Young MC 2. OPP - Naughty By Nature 3. It takes Two - Rob Base & DJ EasyRock 4. Humpty Dance - Digital Underground 4. Others from that time zone A few others that are always good include: 1. Groove is in the Heart - Deeee-lite 2. I'm gonna be (500 miles) AND I'm on my way - Proclaimers 3. Laid - James Of course you have the standards as well: 1. Shook me all night long - AC/DC 2. Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana Also, real men dance. Guys with no rhythm CLAIM that real men don't dance.
KayJay1971 238 Posted June 24, 2008 Why does the DJ always insist on people dancing at events like this? Why do some people assume that if you aren't dancing, you aren't having fun? I thought the DJ's entire job was to play songs that the party goers wanted to hear? Maybe the guests would just rather listen to the music and relive their younger years. (and get totallybombed). I hate the whole pressure to dance thing, mainly because I have no rythym and probably never will.

I hate the whole pressure to dance thing, mainly because I have no rythym and probably never will. As a DJ, when I am hired to work a function, I assume that that they hired me to get people dancing. Every now and then (It's very rare), I'll have someone tell me that they just want me to play background music. Other than that, my job is to make them dance. If I get some clown asking me to play Zepellin, the first thing I ask him is if he's going to dance to it if I play it. Of course, 99.9% of the time, he says no. Although, if it's very early-on in teh proceedings, and no one has started dancing yet, I have no problem throwing on a good 'listening' tune. But once they are dancing, that's my goal the entire night.
