Next new technology

Recommended Posts

Whaddya think? As far as I'm concerned, we're pretty much on the waning edge of the Digital Revolution. Now, it's not about 'can we do it?' it's about finding new applications, making things smaller, combining functionality, increasing speed, convergence - But nothing really 'revolutionary'.

Where do you think the next big revolution in technology will be - or should be??

Seems to me it has to be in conveyance. Hopefully, in automobiles. Seems like the next great change is/should be the elimination of the combustion engine as we know it. Revolutions in technology happen when there's a convergence of necessity and capability. We have the technology for (say) Hydrogen powered automobiles. We also face a greater and greater instability in the oil producing regions. Add that to environmental concerns, and I'd say this is where we will and should - see the Next Big Thing.

Lots of other places - Medicine, for example. But I think (hope) that's where we're going to see it.

:dunno: the push for technology is now more consumer driven than ever. Processor speeds, memory, graphics, audio... this stuff isn't being ramped up for the military or government as much anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of virtual entertainment craze take over. A blending of home audio and video with "second life" gaming concepts. Before you know it, there will be millions "addicted" to their virtual world.

... or maybe not. :dunno:

Kind of like that dweeb from Star Trek (NG) that was addicted to the Holo-Diick?

I believe in 100-200 years (who knows how long), cars will drive themselves on most roads and highways.

I picture a metal strip running down the center of the road, and onboard computers will communicate with a central monitoring system. I think it will first be used on major highways and eventually be installed into smaller roads. It will virutally eliminate traffic jams and car wrecks.

Just look to asia. They're about 1-2 years ahead of us. They have camera phones that have 5 mexapixel cameras on them. We have what, 2? Its ridiculous.

But yea, there is already a huge virtual reality craze. WoW has what, 18 million members already? And they're making other games like second life. Some people take these message boards too seriously.

But yea, its hard to read where tech is going except for the always more more more more more.

actually, i have no idea, but i'm pretty sure whatever it is, it'll be the porn industry that is the driving force behind it.

:dunno: not too far fetched really.

the porn industry is (IMO) the driving force behind the internet.

In terms of annual sales, the porn industry is bigger than the mainstream movie industry, bigger than the automotive industry, bigger than pro sports... yet it is still "underground".

The porn portion will be the biggest part of the virtual reality addiction. Press a button and live/be/do anyone you want to (virtually).

you think you freaks have a hard time getting out of your mom's basement now... none of you are ever going to leave... life will be one big Madden tournament, some Gears of War, and a finishing fock of Jenna Jameson... you'll fall asleep mouth-breathing with your pecker in hand and wake up tomorrow anxious to do it all over again.

F' futuristic fuel and cars. None of you are gonna' want or need to get to a job.

We got the Segway. What else could we possibly need? :dunno:

yeah, THAT sure didn't live up to the hype, did it?

Useful in many situations, but definitely wasn't the revoluntionary force it was hyped to be.

I think they misoverestimated the willingness of consumers to spend thousands of dollars to look like complete dorks.

That would be awesome. To go in there and fock Deanna Troi and Dr. Crusher everyday would be a focking blast. :dunno:

Medicine is in the dark ages compared to where it should be. I say biotech.

That's because Dean Kaman is a focking self-promoting jackwad.

The Next Big Thing.

It's already here... It is the Wellness industry.

The Wellness industry 20-30 years ago wasn't anywhere near as big as it is today.

Around 20 million a year then, and now it's a $200 Billion industry.

By the year 2010 - 2015 1 Trillion annually. I'm already cashing in on the next big thing.

Finding better ways of distribution is the key. Distributing the right products at the right time is the key.

Sam Walton of Wallmart didn't start Wallmart until he was 44 and by the time he was 61 he was one of the richest men alive. He found better ways of distributing products.

Fred Smith of Fed ex didn't invent the way mail is delivered he simply started an overnight distribution business and I don't have to tell you how he's doing.

Kalvin Klien didn't invent Jeans he "customized" them by putting his name on the a$$ and became an instant Millionair.

There are a couple of things that I think are on the verge of changing the world...

1) For all the technology in which we pollute the world, I think that the next big change will be technology that not only produces no pollution, but that will actually reverse the changes. Almost like huge CO2 scubbers or water purification systems, things that will cancel out and reverse the negative effects that humans have on the earth.

2) Genetic and biological engineering will change the way we produce and consume food. More food production will be absolutely necessary to sustain the growth rates of the human race.

3) The big one: Integration of technology into biological processes. Chips that are implanted that regulate insulin or blood pressure. Chips that are implanted into the cerebral cortex that will manipulate the body. Chips intergrated into the senses, such as the eyes or ears, that will allow for communication directly into the sesory pathways of the human.

Either that or a little machine that you plug in and stick your peemis into that will simulate the sensations from a video. :bandana:

This still amazes me. How does this industry continue to thrive online? Who buys a whole movie anyway? Those free 10 second clips are all I need.

Not the next one, but a few decades down the road (assuming it's possible), a Star Trek type transporter. Even if it's not possible for living things to use it, billions of dollars would be saved in transportation costs and time.

it's only a matter of time before CDs, DVDs, and video games are sold stictly as memory sticks... like the ones you put in cameras... i'm pretty sure they have the technology to do that now, but the problem is getting the money they have invested in the discs and now blueray... it's a slow moving technology because of the profit they want to make i think...

i don't know if they'll have this technology ever... or if they'll simply go to everything being wireless and you can download said CD/DVD/ or game straight to your computer than transfer it wirelessly to your TV or soemthing

Don't be so sure...I was reading an article today in Discover Magazine about a group that has developed the first useful quantum computer. Digital binary code could become a thing of the past. Instead of a bits of information processed in binay code, information units (called qubits) are quartenary and governed by probabilities of quantum mechanics. These machines could open up a whole new realm of possibilities. I don't have any link for the Discover article (it is the newest issue) but you can read a little about quantum computing HERE

a monkey with four asses.

That could be a popular item with some of the Geeks around here. :bench:

Things like that usually take a long time to become mainstream. It's usually because of the product being of high cost to the public. TV sales are up because the cost has come down so much.

It's really all about the Baby Boomers. They have been dictating the economy for the last half century or more. They account for 5 billion of our 10 trillion dollar anuall economy.

Ya got a product that they want and need than you're on your way.

They are responsible for the housing boom.

They are responsible for the Automotive boom.

They are, I think you get the point.

Once every decade something REALLY BIG! comes along.

In the 70's it was the Microwave.

In the 80's it was the VCR.

In the 90's it was PC and the Internet.

In the 2000's it's all about Wellness.

The next big thing the Boomers want are products that have to do with Anti Aging.

Youth! They don't want to age, they want to rollerblade and have fun. They don't want to age. Who does?

That's where all my focus is.
