Paul Ryan, like Romney, will only release two years of tax returns

Paul Ryan to follow Romney’s lead, release two years of tax returns

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Sunday defended Mitt Romney against Democratic calls for him to release more tax returns and said he would follow the presumptive GOP nominee’s lead and release only two years of records.

In his first interview with Romney since being selected as his running mate, Ryan would not specifically disclose how many years of tax records he had given to the campaign during its vice presidential vetting.

“It was a very exhaustive vetting process, said Ryan on CBS’s “60 Minutes.” “It’s a confidential vetting process, so there were several years.”

Ryan said he would release the same amount of records Romney has. “I'm going to be releasing two, which is what he's releasing,” he said.

Democrats have pressured Romney to release additional records after a report last month detailed his offshore financial holdings and have used the issue to paint the GOP contender as out-of-touch with Americans struggling in the weak economy.

What is Mitt Romney hiding? It's pretty ridiculous when he goes so far as to dictate how many tax returns his VP pick can release.

Joe Biden has released 13 years' worth of returns.

Good for him. They should make a deal with the criminal white house gang.

Release the fast and furious documents, release another couple years of tax returns.

Another couple of years for Obamas college transcripts.

Sounds like a fair and reasonable way to solve this.

Joe Biden also claimed that his name is John Carter and he lives on Mars.

It would be stupid for him to do anything else. Does anyone think anymore?

This is the answer. If Mitt Romney released any more years the documents would be drilled down to every detail and turned against him. "Look people, Mitt made 4 Million dollars in 2005!@#! You only made 40k, how can he know what the working man feels? Vote Obama in 2012!@#!" I can see the commercials now.

I think it has less to do with 'hiding' something, than it does simply not giving the Democrat spin machine any more ammo.

How on earth can I vote for a politician until I know how much he pays in taxes?

how can you vote for a politician when you know 90% of what he says to get elected will change once he takes office?

Do you really believe that? They are already pounding on him about not releasing. It seems to me that there are definitely things in there that Mitt really really doesn't want people to know because he knows it will look bad. Hard to say people who make a lot of money are paying too much in taxes, when you are paying something like 11%.

I'm guessing Mitt won't release his tax returns because they include much higher income with a lower tax rate, more offshore shelters, and possibly some huge donations to his cult. The two years he released were scrubbed - the earlier years will be more of the same. He can't let Ryan release more than two years because then voters will ask why the VP candidate is more transparent than his running mate.

Perception is reality for most people, KSB. You know that. Do you remember when George HW Bush went into a grocery store and was amazed at the scanner at the checkout, a technology that had been there for several years at that point? Instantly, he was shown to be out of touch with every person who shops for their own food, which is mostly everybody who isn't really rich. Whether that was fair or unfair didn't make a difference, the image was planted in people's heads. Did it have anything to do with him not being re-elected? Maybe not, but the image was effective for the Democrats. On the other side, you have Bill Clinton, who felt everybody's pain, and George W, who people felt was a guy they could "sit down and have a few beers with", when in reality, they would as soon step on you as look at you in real life. Obama does this as well, even though you know he gives two shiots about anything except his legacy and staying in office for another term.

Painting someone as out of touch with the common man is the easiest way to sway the electorate. Unfortunately, most don't realize that they're all out of touch, they all travel in this stratosphere that 99.9% of us will never experience.

Seems like you are the one out of touch............with reality.

Which proves my point even more strongly than before. Perception doesn't need to be based in reality to be effective in politics.

Thank!

You are welcome.

Reminds me of how Romney was astounded by touch screen technology at Wawa. "I could order my sandwich ... without even talking to the peasants who work at the sandwich counter!"

Why? Did they get into college as foreign exchange students?

Neither one of them ever went to college and they're both Mexican.

That is two different subjects. This thread is about Ryan releasing only 2 year's worth of tax returns. If Ryan does anything other than what Romney does, then it opens the ticket to scrutiny. If Romney wants to release more than 2 years, do you want to bet that Ryan does the same thing at the same time?

This is such a non-story.

Romney's returns are another matter altogether.

Why?

There are some potential legal concerns about how he amassed a $100M IRA, considering the max you can put in a year is less than $50k (even with special provisions).

Mitt has done some shady deals in business and his taxes. If you think that he has not pushed the envelope of tax law, then you are naive.

I'm sure the IRS would have had something to say about all that by now.

You clowns need new talking points.

Doesn't mean its illegal, but if you followed the 'carried interest' discussions, this would be an extreme use coupled with the avoided taxes getting it into his IRA

First you basically take fee commissions which should probably be taxed as ordinary income as carried interest to pay the 15% cap gains instead of the 35% ord income rate

Secondly you contribute that carried interest into your IRA in some complicated fashion at some par/nominal type of value for tax purposes, but it allows you to stuff an obscene amount of money into a tax free/(maybe deferred tax) vehicle.

Super complicated (beyond my pay grade), and obv the narratives that would come from this would be vicious.
