edjr 5,567 Posted February 11, 2014 First (likely) NFL player who is publicly known to be gay - not worth talking about at all? What's worth talking about?
MTSkiBum 1,594 Posted February 11, 2014 Yes its a story. I think a lot of folks are just saying its going to way over blown, this guy will be made into some cult hero, we will hear about it ad nauseum all throughout the NFL draft. On and on and on. Good thing the geek club is above it and didn't turn this into a multi page thread. I am not sure why the geek club is making this into a big deal, talk about something interesting. MDC 5,893 Posted February 11, 2014 What's worth talking about? Whether it will affect his draft stock, if the fact that he's out will affect his relationship with teammates, etc. Story of the year? No. Worth talking about for a few days, why not?

IGotWorms 3,315 Posted February 11, 2014 I didn't say anything remotely close to that, dumbass. Apparently it is already accepted inside NFL locker rooms. Not an issue. Not a surprise you aren't aware of this. ESPN has ginned it up into a big issue with low information types like you. Careful RP, don't toddle over! Whoops, he fell! Poor little guy is still getting his feet under him
edjr 5,567 Posted February 11, 2014 Whether it will affect his draft stock, if the fact that he's out will affect his relationship with teammates, etc. Story of the year? No. Worth talking about for a few days, why not? Why does it matter? Tons of players draft stock falls for a variety of reasons. Remember Brady Quinn? They thought he smoked pole, is that why he dropped? We know that's why Aaron Rodgers fell so far. Why did Incognito pick on Martin? He must have been gay. I just don't care what happens in a locker room.
NewbieJr 540 Posted February 11, 2014 This has a huge effect on the draft. Believe me, there are 32 teams who have already had front office/coaching discussions regarding this guy. This guy now brings along a Tebow-esque media circus. He's already fallen significantly on CBS' draft projection list. At the draft, his name will get mentioned as many times as Monte Teo's last year. For the team that drafts him, they will get ten times the media coverage at their first minicamp. If the guy makes the team, the big story will be "first openly gay player to make NFL roster". If he, God forbid, gets cut, every gay activist and media outlet will make a huge deal about it and question whether the cut was related to his sexual orientation. The team drafting him is taking on a huge responsibility here. I bet a great deal of teams have absolutely zero intention of drafting him now. Unless he just blows away the competition at the combine. But since he was already considered a 'tweener' and had question marks, many teams will pass up on the media circus. Anyone with the illusion that this isn't a real story is out of touch with today's world.

While certainly raising some eyebrows, his circumstances probably didn't lead too many GMs to wonder if his coaches and teammates would accept him as part of the team. phillybear 364 Posted February 11, 2014 Tebow is a terrible qb - he flat out sucks. This example is a poor one. But, edjr said it was all about winning. Isn't Tim Tebow a winning QB? He's a winner. All those comeback wins. Took a horsesh!t Denver team and won a division. Won a playoff game. Then, traded to the Jets. Where he got zero shot at the starting job. And was never allowed to replace the horrific starter. Now, out of the league. But, but, but, he's a winner. This is the NFL, it's all about winning.

Look around, the NFL is littered with drug users, drug sellers, ex cons, domestic violence, dwi offenders, rapist, tax cheats, you name it - the league has it. This institution is far from a monastery, w/out question it's all about winning. Tebow is a bust, always has been, always will be. To use him as a defense to any kind of 'winning' argument is just flat out silly. To suggest he isn't starting for some team bcoz he's gay is equally moronic.

BunnysBastatrds 1,920 Posted February 12, 2014 No they aren't... He is playing the game as well... He has an entire marketing team built around it But you draft guys based on talent and character. Guy is a team leader, and has willingly made himself the representative and poster child for gay people. Takes some guts to do that, and you figure the likelihood is very high that he is a hard worker who wants to excel with the burden he is carrying. Compare that to drafting your typical thug who spent years in college and can't read or spell his name... It definitely raises his profile. It will definitely give him more looks. Its a net help to his cause. So the agents are well versed in the art of the first openly ghey male in professional American sports marketing?i thought he was the first one? There's precedent for this? New flash, both sides are shitting their pants on the best way to deal with this. They both knew it was coming and were somewhat prepared, butt now they get to see what works and fails. Someone may have brought this up already, but I heard for the first time why the Robinson comparison is complete BS; Robinson couldn't stay in the closet. What he went through and when he went through are not comparable.

DankNuggs 305 Posted February 12, 2014 Wednesday, February 12, 2014Michael Sam is in high demand By Darren RovellESPN.com Since Missouri defensive end Michael Sam announced on Sunday that he is gay, his agent Joe Barkett has been inundated with calls, including those from Fortune 500 companies. "Every time I'm on the phone, I'm getting phone calls," Barkett told ESPN.com. "There's always one from a company expressing their interest in Michael. Name any type of industry, we've probably heard from a company in their sector in the last 48 hours." Barkett said all the interest is coming from mainstream companies, not gay brands that have a product or service to sell specifically to the gay population. "We haven't really heard from companies that market specifically to the LGBT community," Barkett said. "It has been large companies who obviously support LGBT initiatives." That doesn't surprise gay marketing strategist Bob Witeck, whose firm in Washington, D.C., has focused on marketing to the gay population over the past two decades. "His true marketing potential isn't to gay people," Witeck said. "His true marketing potential will be reached by selling to consumers who appreciate him because of his individuality. These companies are looking to build new stories and Michael stands out." Sam sent his first tweet at 8:02 p.m. ET on Sunday night. He now has nearly 80,000 followers, more than any other potential 2014 NFL draftee except for quarterbacks Johnny Manziel, AJ McCarron and Aaron Murray. http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2014/story/_/id/10445011/michael-sam-inundated-marketing-opportunities-coming-out
DankNuggs 305 Posted February 12, 2014 Yep, the timing had nothing to do with potential marketing upside.... LOL... Had he waited to be a 3-5th round pick that maybe doesn't make the team or is a special teams guy he gets equal amount of buzz...

Remember that "circus" For christ sakes he started at linebacker his rookie year after being drafted in the 2nd round., Nothing to see here. If this kid can play, he will be drafted. BOTTOM LINE Yeah...he can defuse it pretty easily like Te'o. Say he will talk about it at the combine...and thats it. There will be no discussions about it...say he is just like everyone else and wants to play football. Some idiots will still bring it up. Opposing fans will be harsh for sure. But this can calm pretty easily if handled correctly.
Sho Nuff 719 Posted February 12, 2014 Gay is gay. Aaron Rodgers can date and pretend to fock any hot chick he wants. We know the troof. But yeah, people can keep speculating and looking stupid as they do.
DankNuggs 305 Posted February 12, 2014 No issue with anything he's doing, wish him the best. The fact it has huge upside for him takes away from 'the story' that it was bravely done to his detriment and he chose to do it anyways.
