parrot 790 Posted April 17, 2014 I have disagreed with every name brought up in this thread, but this is the first one that i felt the need to respond to. Prince is arguably the most talented songwriter/musician/singer of our lifetime. If you had said "on the acting side..." He may not be everyone's cup of tea, hell he's not really mine, but anyone who says Prince in anything other than an incredible musician is just clowning. phillybear 366 Posted April 17, 2014 Nothing that you and the other retard in this thread post surprises me. It's just interesting to see how far the stupidity goes. Oh, so now you are saying musical taste is NOT arbitrary? Please. Don't act so high and mighty. I jumped into music with REM and bypassed all that boring dinosaur rock to explore new sounds that were out there and were actually pleasing to my ear. But of all the grandma rock, I find Led Zep the most trite. Overrated. Which is subjective.

porkbutt 897 Posted April 17, 2014 After Frank M's earlier response, I'm almost afraid to say it, but if I was making a most over-rated band, Jon Bonham would be on drums. you're on crack. bonham defined rocknroll drummin'. he was a beast. anyone saying zep is overrated is borderline retarded. overplayed yes. but what page forgot about guitar...all these new bands combined will never know. also: green day (fockin awful) aerosmith metallica
phillybear 366 Posted April 17, 2014 Eh, for my official selection of a musician, I'd have to go with Bruce Springstein. The guy just can't sing worth a sh!t. Can't play. Talks way too much during shows. Plays bad music for a long time like it's a badge of honor in boring an audience. You're from New Jersey? Really? Who knew? Honestly, why does he need a horn section. A cool horn section is the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Bruce is not that kind of cool. Has he ever written a song where the lyrics weren't cringe worthy? He grew up rich, but writes lyrics about being poor. What a pretentious twat.
5-Points 3,844 Posted April 17, 2014 Not over rated imo, but they are two of my favs. Springsteen tells stories in his songs that compare to the likes of cash and dylan. Great stuff. As far as cobain, well he only helped change the landscape of the style of music at the time. Completely helped kill hair bands...thank god. The difference being Johnny told stories about his life and Springsteen tells stories about someone else's.

A story is just that....a story. I dont really care if it's true or not. But like some else said, I doubt he killed someone just to watch him die. I also didn't realized his dad named him sue??? He sang a lot of gospel songs and I don't think he thought he was God. My point is that Bruce Springsteen is not in the same ballpark as Johnny Cash when it comes to talent. I am not a huge Prince fan by any stretch, but he is anything but overrated. That guitar piece at the Harrison RRHOF induction is off the charts. If Prince concentrated on being just a guitar player he would likely be Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Duane Allman, Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughn all rolled into one. paulinstl 296 Posted April 17, 2014 Overrated is such a subjective term, and personal opinion plays too much a factor. It almost makes this an impossible idea, but having said that, here is a list of people and bands I believe got too much credit based on their talent, or lack thereof: U2...Good band for sure, but to be talked about in the same strata as The Beatles and The Stones is ridiculous. That by definition is overrated. Nirvana...I actually walked out one of their shows before the release of their first album. They were horrible. Cobain played two chords and struggled with those. I get their contribution to the anti-commercial scene that revolted over what rock music had become, but you can't hide a lack of musicianship, and I believe that's a major factor in judging musical worth. Any and all hair metal bands. Just cheesy and all schtick. Absolutely no balls or depth. The fact that 13 year old girls loved that crap tells you all you need to know about them. They were nothing more than a visually striking MTV video machine driven garbage flingers. And don't get me started on HIp Hop. I will cry myself to sleep again tonight with a visual of some 16 year old white suburbanite driving mom's SUV with some idiotic rap rhyme about hos and gangstas cranking on the horrible factory stereo. Who said rapping bad poetry over prerecorded electronica is considered worthy of adulation? And it's not a race thing. To me there is no difference between Vanilla Ice and Ludacris. They both suck and are no-talen a$$clowns.

There is no way you can ever convince me that bands like Poison have worth of any kind. My argument for Poisons worth is that they wrote a bunch of "fun" songs and got the girls to drop their panties when they heard them. CC Deville was not a very talented guitarist, IMO. (based on the songs they released.) but I loved the sound and the message at the time. Then again, music is subjective, right? Sticking with Poison, the music snob in me wouldn't consider them a very talented band at all. Luckily for myself, I'm able to look beyond that (unlike some of my music snob frineds) and appreciate them for what they are / were. A fun band to listen to. Earlier GFIAFP said that Ozzy was overated. While I love most of his work, I totally agree with him. Dudes voice is so synthesized, and has been for quite some time now. Vocal talent? Not so much, imo. Finder of kick ass guitarists to bring to the limelight? Hell Yea I would put the technical guitar skills of the best Hair Band guitarists over any other genre. It's really not even close. Jimmi Hendrix is over rated. Do I think he was an incredible guitarist and ground breaking? Fock yes. The reason he is over rated imo is because everyone seems to automatically assume he was the best. Therefore, over rated. Prince? Very under rated. Randy Rhoads? Over rated. SRV ? Right where he should be. Incredible. Over rated by the masses: Richards Slash (I love GnR, btw) Sir Paul Harrison Townshend The Edge Under rated by the masses: John Pettruci Warren DiMartini Prince Stevie Stevens Alex Lifeson Vito Bratta

A few comments: Hendrix: not sure how you can call him overrated. He was so ahead of the curve of guitar artists at his time, IMO it is like calling Babe Ruth or Jim Brown overrated. Townshend: completely disagree. If you look at the complete package (music writing, lyric writing, art, performance, singing), he is on my Mount Rushmore of musical talent. If he were born 500 years ago he would have been Mozart. Lifeson: Love that you mentioned him. Lee and Peart are the more known Rush members but Lifeson pulls off the guitar part like nobody else could.

I never said that Townshend was overrated as a musician. Just overrated as a guitarist Yes, Jimmi was WAY ahead of the curve, and incredibly talented, but he doesn't even crack my top 10. (guitarists) Once again, subjective, right? Just because I think he is overrated by the masses doesn't mean that I think he has no talent. That honor goes to Cobain.
