NFL: 11 of 12 Pat's balls under inflated.

Recommended Posts

Ok, within the next couple of days a patsy from New England's equipment staff will emerge to take the fall, and say they did it without belichecks or any prominent member of the pats orginizations knowledge. He just knew Tom liked them soft and did it on his own. Book it.

Just like you used to book 'em down at the station?

What every Pats fan is thinking about DeflateGate:

he has had some good skits

A few thoughts:

* I made a previous reference to Nixon, and it really seems relevant because the Pat's did not need to cheat, and yet they did anyway. The correlation between the two seems more relevant, two smart guys doing dumb stuff out of some apparent paranoia, cheating when they had to good reason to do so.

* The Patriots, and all their time under Bellichick, will forever be marred because of these silly incidents, needlessly

* We now know that the balls were reinflated to the proper level after the Pat's learned they had been caught at halftime, and I think they played better with the properly inflated ones.

* It is not whether or not the cheating helped them win, it is the fact that once again they cheated

* If there is evidence that the NFL warned them after the Colts raised the issue, and today I learned that the Colts were alerted by the Raven's prior to their game during the regualr season, and then they did it again.....that might bring about some harsh penalties

* I don't know what the punishment should/might be but suspending Bellicheat or Thomasina for the Super Bowl could be hurting the perceived quality of their most important game, the big money maker.

* If Thomasina is suspended, and I doubt he will be, it won't really matter, you can plug Jamarcus Russell into that offense and have him throw 3 yard slants all day, there really isn't anything special about that, any QB can do it, Matt Cassell showed us that

I must admit, even as a self described "Patriot Hater", well except for that one year I had Tommy Brady as my fantasy QB along with Randy Moss and I dominated my league, this has gotten a bit out of hand and over-blown. Should the NFL do "something"? Of course but it's not all that big of a deal. Maybe a fine or something is all that is warranted IMO. Unless it comes out that this has been going on for a long time and it's part of what they do. Knowingly get the balls approved then tamper with them after they've been approved.

Really, I think a fine and loss of draft pick are in order. If this were a first time thing with the Patriots you may let then go with a fine, given the history if skirting the rules the NFL should come down a little harder.

If it comes out they knowling and deliberabely tampered with the balls AFTER they were approved, then I think you'll see a fine and maybe a loss of a draft pick or something. But other than that, I don't think it had much to do with how many wins or losses they had this year and all that stuff people are saying. That's the overblown part.

Still doesn't make it fun to throw out the jokes and the ****'s though. :dancingbanana:

Agreed, I don't think it effects wins / losses but I think it makes the Pats again look like a scummy organization.

Sorry if this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I heard on sports radio that it's come out that the Colts also noticed the deflated balls in their week 11 game with New England. Didn't catch all the details on whether it was a player, equipment manager, coach, or whoever or whether or not it was reported to an official. I'm sure that will all come out when the penalty was handed down.

Also found it interesting to hear that the Patriots running backs did not fumble once all year. Makes sense if they're underinflating their balls. I can palm a slightly inderinflated basketball, but not a regulation one. Huge penalty coming. Huge advantage they've had all year. I wonder if Belicheck thought of it after the Kansas City game?

Ridley only made it till week 6. I guess this is the only year they deflated the balls

Oh, and Benjarvis Green-Ellis never fumbled with New England. Zero. Goes the Cincinnati and has 5 in two years. LOLOL

Oh, I think this may go deep folks. Just as Spygate wasn't just one game or season, much will be revealed about "genius" Belichick's deceptions and lies.

How many did Ridley have. (8 in 2 years) LOLOL

I guess they gave him different balls, because they didn't like him.

Of course it isn't an isolated incident, unless you think Brady woke up that morning and decided he wanted the ball noticeably different than he was used to.

Rogers needs to stop tampering with his balls.

Why? You do know he, like every QB is allowed to do that? It's screwing with them after they've been given to the refs is what gets you in trouble, idiot. Cheaters gotta cheat. :(

SI Story

Every quarterback can tamper with the 12 footballs assigned to his team in the days before the game. In the NFL, each team is allowed weekly to break in 12 new footballs as it sees fit, according to the quarterback’s preference. That includes taking the shine and slipperiness off the new balls, and compressing them and working them in to soften the leather. By rule, those 12 footballs are then delivered to the officiating crew on site 2 hours and 15 minutes before the game begins.

At that point the head linesman inspects each football with one or more members of his crew. If need be, the officials will clean off the balls. Then they will insert a needle into the balls, one by one, to ensure the balls are inflated to the proper pressure: between 12.5 and 13.5 psi. If a ball is underinflated, an electric pump is used to fill it to the requisite level. Then all 12 balls are marked by silver Sharpie with a referee’s personal preference of a mark—Gene Steratore’s crew uses the letter “L,” for Steratore’s fiancée, Lisa—and put back into the bag, and zipped. The bags are handed to the ballboys minutes before the opening kickoff. If it’s raining, or bad weather is on the way, the officials might tell the ballboys to change the ball on every play, whether it hits the ground on the previous play or not.

To sum up: Yes, the quarterback or his equipment staff can break in the balls in whatever way they want a couple of days before the game. But no, the quarterback cannot dictate the level of air pressure in the ball. Or at least he cannot do it legally. And the low air pressure in the Patriots’ footballs is why this is a story.

2013 The MMQB’s Peter King went behind the scenes with Gene Steratore’s officiating crew before a Ravens-Bears game at Soldier Field. Here, the crew inspect the game balls in the officials’ locker room for proper inflation. Balls that have been worked up during the week to the quarterback’s satisfaction by the teams are turned over to the officials two hours and 15 minutes before the game. Those that are above 13.5 pounds per square inch are deflated to the league-mandated 12.5 to 13.5 psi. Those that are under 12.5 get pumped back up to the regulation pressure.

Drobeski desperately grasping at straws

When you're a pink hat fan, that has never seen any wrong in anything your "team" does. It's hard to cope with this recent news.

It's like when a parent hears their child has done something really bad.

It's not just a river in Egypt.

Looks like Billy Boy is making sure he is not held accountable, pushing it off on Thomasina....

"We all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists have certain preferences on footballs," Belichick said.

"They know a lot more about it than I do. They're a lot more sensitive about it than I am. And I hear them comment on it from time to time. But I can tell you and they will tell you that there's never sympathy whatever from me on that subject, zero.

"Tom's personal preferences on his footballs are something that he can talk about in much better detail and (provide more) information than I can possibly provide."

And then he turns them over to the officials who adjust them accordingly. Nice reach...Jane Fonda, on her best day, couldn't stretch like that.

The sad thing is that I doubt the actually needed to ever cheat, but yet they did, and its just dumb. All they are doing is tarnishing their lifes work, and it never needed to happen......

he said he doesn't like it when they adjust them....this means they don't always adjust them, which is what probably happened with this case.

Its just another reason for the haters to cry and deny their guys do the same thing.

I've seen Rodgers say he likes the ball to have more air in it, and he doesn't like the officials taking air out. But I haven't seen anything about him taking those balls and over inflating them and I haven't seen anything about other teams suspecting he's using a different ball nor have I seen the league investigating what football Rodgers is using.

I think you're mixing him up with another QB.

And again, what was the punishment for the Vikings in the game they were heating the balls ? Same deal here, should be no different.

if they haven't been over inflated why would the refs have to take air out ?
