A somewhat innocuous thing has completely, and forever, tarnished a franchise and 4 SB titles. Whether or not it had anything to do with it - it has...... If I were a Pats' fan, I'd be pissed.

Goodell had to keep the suspension as-is or he would have undermined everything that Wells did. He has done this in the past and it is a great strategy. Be hard on the crimes and if it gets overturned by someone else, he can at least say that it was not his fault.

That could be a good thing or a bad thing for him. The good is that he does not have to be deposed on the facts of what he did and did not do. This. So that he doesn't look like he's throwing them under the bus, he could have worded it that hew puts a lot of pressure on his guys to make sure that everything is just right. And that they might have misinterpreted when he said how he wanted the balls to be low on air. He should have said he takes full responsibility and places no blame on anyone else. Done and done. He doesn't need to... he can prove the NFL had no process to monitor the supposed rules he broke to possibly confirm or deny any wrongdoing... Has no precendent for punishment, and the punishment put forth is draconian. Not to mention the initial suspension was by Troy Vincent who has no CBA authority to hand down any punishment.

 

Goddell knows the public relations hit he takes for reducing the suspension, makes him look like an idiot... So let it get overturned in court and he can still claim he stuck to his guns and his warped view of integrity...
