Is she fat ?

Recommended Posts

Your link has only one reference to BMI, and it is in regards to stroke:

That being said, I would expect some correlation between BMI and obesity-related health problems. But that doesn't mean there can't be different body types like we discussed before.

The definitions of overweight and obesity are based on BMI  The are plenty of associations between high BMI and disease.

The standards for ideal body weight/BMI fall within a range to account for differences in body weight. Only at the extremes (individuals with excess muscle mass, typically because of training, or skinny people with excess fat) does it fail. The former group is like 12% of men, while the latter is 15% of women. So it isn't perfect. But the overall percentage of "skinny fat" people exceeds the "healthy obese." So it is pretty amazing that nearly every dude who has ever walked in a gym has a high BMI because of all their "muscle." Meanwhile, all the obesity related diseases are on the rise.

BMI system is a broken system. A lot of doctors and nutritionists will agree.

Here is a picture showing 5 lbs of fat and 5 lbs of muscle.

Notice the difference here. You can look great, have abs, have muscles, be perfectly healthy, but still be overweight BMI standards. I wish they would just so away with BMI completely.

Someone like Vin Diesel is considered overweight

Dwayne Johnson is considered obese

Yet these men look great and are in great health. System is broken and people need to stop going by BMI standards

Real life people aren't typically built like action movie stars. What do you endorse as a cheap, easily accessible metric to determine if someone is overweight or obese? Tanatastic's arousal level?

It works if the person is CLEARLY overweight. However the system is actually bogus. You'll find a lot more articles on how it's not a good way to measure someone's physical health than the opposite. Almost every single doctor and nutritionist of worked with and spoken to all have denounced the BMI measurements. Don't see why you see to think it's good still. Might need to read up on it

You never were a smart man

If you look at a photo and pause to think is she fat. Just remember out of the hundreds of photos that was the best one.

So most think #2 is the hottest (medium build and larger breasts), while 1(thin) and 4/5(thick) are the most polarizing.

I would say 1 is actually at the end for everyone except you. 4/5 ahead of the thin girl

Which is interesting because 3 is the thinnest IMO.

Thinnest to fattest : 3,2,1,5,4

And before some of you get your panties in a wad: None of them are fat.

Waist circumference is also a useful tool. My wellness assessment includes both. What is your point?

This is my point Dr Venkman

No, you said you wished they stopped using BMI, that it was, terrible, etc.

I said it is useful, but has some limitations which aren't applicable to the majority of people.

Because i can see myself in the mirror. At 5'6 it says 172 pounds is overweight. I can barely maintain this weight without going up and thats while eating zero fast food, lots of fruit and vegetables, and getting my dietary fat from nuts. Plus i go to the gym 4 times a week. Lift 3 and play racketball for 1. I also have drank twice in about 6ish weeks, about 5 beers each time. No one would look at me and say i am overweight unless they were expecting me to be chiseled with a 6 pack, in which i can see some abdominal definition in the morning when im dehydrated.

Care to share your waist size?

So remind me what you are advocating instead? And try cut and paste for your definitive study on BMI, concluding its limitations exceed its merit. TIA

I literally gave you a WebMD link. If you can't google then here's a couple more.

Im sure there are more scientific articles but when googling on my phone this is the most I'm going to give you. Though like I said a lot of healthcare providers are steering away from it because they know it isn't accurate. It's good for someone who's clearly obese to give them a target weight to shoot for but other than that it's useless

5 isn't thick. 4 is the thickest, then 1 IMO. 5 is medium build. HTH

Those are better links (except the Dr. Oz one) which all say roughly the same thing: BMI isn't perfect. I've admitted that from the get-go, but the whole topic came up in relation to "thick" women, and Frozenbeernuts insisting he isn't overweight. I have no way to measure their body fat distribution or percentage over the internet, so I used the best tool available. Most doctors offices find themselves in the same dilemma, as many other measures require additional tools to interpret. Waist circumference and waist:hip ratio are notable exceptions.

In summary, BMI has its limitations, but is inexpensive and easy to calculate, with medical data suggesting it correlates with a host of diseases. While some are erroneously classified by BMI, it is an appropriate tool to begin the assessment of overweight/obesity for the majority of the population.

If you're overweight of course you have a higher chance of dying. That's inevitable. No one is disputing that. What we are disputing is using BMI as a reliable tool to classify someone as overweight or obese. It's not a good tool at all. The only time it is good or useful is if you use the eye test and see someone is clearly obese or overweight. Then it's a good, cheap tool to give them a target weight to strive for. "Yes sir your weight is 245 but according to the BMI chart you should be around 170 for you to be healthy". They start dieting and exercising then end up at 175-180 and have all the physical traits as a body builder or athlete. You're not going to say "well you're still overweight so you need to lose another 10 pounds" now are you? No you're not because as a healthcare provider you know better. A lot of times I've seen people who hit their target BMI weight and they look starved and unhealthy.

In conclusion, it's more effective for overweight and obese people to get a target weight. But for the average person no it's not and a lot of healthcare professionals will tell you the same thing
