This has already been addressed - on both fronts:

 

1) Campaigns routinely hire outside firms to do Op Research. Those firms are paid tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars for exactly the kind of information that was being teased. - Bam- value. End of story on that.

 

2) No, the information doesn't have to be 'true', merely plausible. (See: Trump piss memos)

 

3) But, in THIS case? The mere fact (and Junior has already admitted it) that Trump Sr. Advisors met in the QUEST for negative information - is more than enough. Your simple-minded defense (wherever you got it) is equivalent to - "Well, I went to get a blowjob from a hooker - but she only gave me a handy!" Doesn't matter.
