jerryskids 7,281 Posted July 10, 2017 this is me to a T. Used to play very high level slow pitch softball. Tournaments across 5 or 6 states. Played in Pennsylvania state tournament many years Etc. I gave it up when my daughter started playing sports so I could see all of her games. About 5 years ago a local team asked if I would play for them. I agreed. In our second game, I tore my groin so bad that my entire leg was black and blue all the way down to my foot. That was from trying to beat out an infield single. Mind you, this league was slightly above a beer league. Very non-competitive. Some guys playing in cut-off jeans. I only know one way to play. Full speed. I still believe I'm 25 in a lot of ways. And it's not a good way for a guy who was in his mid-forties to play. Then, that same league had an Old-Timers Game about 2 years ago. The field was full of guys between 40 and 55. I was playing left-center field and ran in full speed on a line drive toward Center. I laid out and go for it (missed it, by the way) and knocked the wind out of myself. LOL so to answer the threads question, competitive Sports. I am definitely too old for that now. Brutha!

Mentally i can still play...just physically what used to be there is only there in spurts. I can see the move to make in hoops...i just cant get there like i used to. Ha..so i always consider playing more..then like the other night i was locking up the car at like 11:30pm...did something and the alarm is going off...run in to get the keys and was a twinge away from tearing my Achilles again. Doc last time said i have tendons of someone closer to 60. Probably one of the more depressing things that i cant play. Like i said before...the hard part of getting old isnt that you cant open new doors in your life..its that i cant open certain ones anymore. Sucks.

Either hit it hard enough that you have no chance to beat it out or put it in the outfield. I used to play a ton of competitive softball (4-5 nights a week, 1-2 weekends a month all over the country) and I still play in a competitive league, Sunday Doubleheaders. Every Monday, I feel like I've been hit by a truck. Today is no exception. Our team has two guys in their 30s and the rest are 50 years old +/- 2 years. We play teams of guys whose parents in the stands went to school with some of our players. Those are the fun teams to beat. I will be 50 in a few months, but I feel like I have a few good years left. Especially if I can just DH. I have been grooming myself for that spot for about 10-15 years.

It was a solid hit up the middle and the SS made a nice play and spun around to make the throw. The injury occurred because I went from a jog (thinking I had a base hit) to a sprint half way up the line. Wouldn't have been a problem at 20 or 30. But in my mid-40's without sprinting in years, it did not end well. I didn't know a scrotum could turn that color. lol

I hit a ball that I thought would be off the warning track or maybe off the fence so I ran hard, when it actually cleared the fence I slowed down too abruptly I guess and felt a pretty good pop in the "inner upper leg" area. Cruzer 1,996 Posted July 10, 2017 * Going out and not even getting there until 10 p.m... Fock that, fock even staying up past midnight drinking anywhere. * Fashion, dressing to impress... vuduchile 1,947 Posted July 10, 2017 At age 51, I came up with a stress fracture in my foot while running the bases in a softball game. That was 2 years ago, and I haven't played since. This morning before work, I went to a hoops shooting clinic and felt pain in the same area while doing some of the pivot drills. I realize I can't play anymore, so I'm relegated to coaching the kids. Now I gotta worry about breaking a hip while showing 4th graders how to box out.
cbfalcon 828 Posted July 10, 2017 You guys have done a good job listing some things here that were actually on my list, yet I didn't consciously realize it until now. At age 39..... - Golf. I'm never walking again. When I get to the course, I want to relax and compete, not push myself physically. - Moving. Not only will I no longer help people move, but I won't even move myself. If I can't afford to hire movers, I need to stay where I'm at. - The bar/club that is too loud for a convo. Got caught at one this weekend and we had to audible pretty quickly and head to a more relaxed bar where we could talk. This one hurts because I really really like watching drunk girls dance. - Anything that requires a full speed sprint. I quit softball about 4 years ago because I kept pulling quads, hamstrings, and achilles. No matter how much I'd stretch and warm up, if I tried to talk off from a static position, something pulled hard. - Out drinking past 9-10pm on a work night. Just a few years ago when I was dating, it was common. But now the thought of the next day's struggles is such a dark cloud hovering overhead that I just can't enjoy it. This has really killed my dating life. - Music festivals. I love a good concert more than anything still, but I need a combo of being able to show up just before my band and preferably having a reserved seat if possible. wiffleball 4,800 Posted July 10, 2017 Agreed on the last one. I mean I have done my share of bar time. But I would drink hard fast and be in bed by 8 9,10 p.m. at the latest. Got a buddy who has a very responsible professional job and he is not only driving home shiit ass drunk, he's doing so after the bar closes on a weekday. I don't know how the f*** he does it. Best I can tell, he shows up to work whenever the hell he feels like it. Hell, I'm not even sure I know which of those behaviors are supposed to worry me the most. But he is weeks away from 50 and decades away from that ever being a good idea.

tanatastic 2,062 Posted July 10, 2017 So many of the physical things are creeping up on me at 35. Used to go out and start the night at 10pm. Now it's happy hour at most and in bed by 9. Used to be able to play sports and run around all day. Now just walking all day is a strenuous activity, and forget running more than a few hundred feet. Sex? Used to go for hours no problem. Now 20min is a marathon. All the non physical things, I try to do as much or even more as possible. Superhero movies? They are awesome and I'll watch til I die. Video games, action movies, new tech etc all great and only fuddy duddies say they are too old. Our bodies are what's dying, don't let your imagination die too.
