Help me decide on my new boat

Recommended Posts

My buddies and I are deciding to upgrade boats. I will be pitching in the majority of the money as they are poor and tend to work in lower paying jobs like office managers.

We are strongly considering:

http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2015/Wally-Power-75-3171608/Liguria/Italy?refSource=standard%20listing#.Wui3M5dOmMo

However we are also considering:

https://harrisburg.craigslist.org/boa/d/take-look-these-pictures-boat/6574974908.html

Hopefully the geek club can help me decide.

Little poor for the GC don't you think?

I was considering this: https://amp.businessinsider.com/images/593ecd7dbf76bb25008b53c4-750-462.jpg slightly out of my budget at 4.9 billion, and my poor friends can only afford silver plated yachts. You just can't win. :(

Guy I know on FB just drove to the cape and bought a bought and drove it home, you know on the ocean.

Thing had twin 250 HP engines. I don't know much about boats, I thought, hmm that can't be that expensive.

I did a little research., WAY more than I would have thought.

Nothing like you high rollers though

My friend whose boat I actually go on, has 1 - 250, that's fast enough for me.

I was scrolling down to see if there were more pictures. The focking toes stuck out like a sore thumb.

I am still not buying the daughter excuse. He probably spends so much time in fish guts that he needs to feel pretty every once in a while.

Boats come with crews and staff... you plebs are posting about dinghies.

for those of you confusing boats with dinghies, please follow my rule for poor people: if it floats, flies, or focks, you're better off renting.

I would recommend against buying a major asset (with high upkeep & maintenance) with friends, especially if they are poor.

I don't know... It'd be fun to throw a party and invite the MASH doctors, pro baseball players, and Ralph Macchio... Plan on serving oyster clusters

25-ish years ago my wife and I took a class offered by our company called "Life Management," it was sorta like a Time Management class with other life/financial advice. We still quote several items we learned in that class:

- Rent your toys: Boats are a great example; I worked with a guy who calculated that it was cheaper for him to fly himself and his family to San Diego twice a month and charter a boat vs. maintaining his own boat for pathetic Arizona lakes. We will never own a boat. Some people like MTSkiBum are boat wonks and go out/fish all of the time, so more power to him, but if you aren't that person, rent.

- A part of what we earn is ours to keep: set up a savings plan so that you put away money every paycheck. Kinda duh, but we were young and it seemed like a good idea. :D

- Pay off the lowest balance CC first: this flies in the face of conventional financial wisdom which prescribes to pay off the highest interest rate CC first. But the idea is to pay off a card, get some positive reinforcement from doing that, then apply the minimum payment from that card to the next lowest balance. Wife and I did this to get out of debt after we spent way more than we should have on our wedding.

Both are very nice and will serve its purpose as a dinghy. I have one of each.
