wiffleball 4,642 Posted May 14, 2018 The justices ruled 7-2 that a 25-year-old federal law that has effectively prohibited sports betting outside Nevada cannot block states such as New Jersey that want to set up sports books. The ruling could set the stage for other states to expand legalized gambling as a source of government revenue. ----------

wiffleball 4,642 Posted May 14, 2018 It's all about corruption. The major sports leagues and the NCAA don't want this to happen. So then the next move will be Federal legislation. Given how positively swamp tastic DC is right now, I figure the odds are actually pretty good legislation would pass.

Yeah, like the NCAA is a bunch of upstanding citizens who only want what's best for the students who happen to be athletes.

GobbleDog 816 Posted May 14, 2018 I've been on-line gambling for 15+ years. Being illegal or legal doesn't effect me. Then again, I don't have thousands of dollars in my account that needs government protection.

There is a random chance at hitting it big. Its worth the fun of trying if one has the expendable money imo. Plus the private leagues are always fun.

vuduchile 1,941 Posted May 14, 2018 So what does this end up actually looking like? Online sites dominate and charge stupid fees? Existing Indian casinos open sports books? Betting windows at every stadium and arena in the land? States drag their heels and nothing happens in my lifetime?
TimmySmith 2,782 Posted May 14, 2018 States drag their heels and nothing happens in my lifetime? States that want it already have everything in place. States that don't will make laws forbidding it or drag feet. IMO, On-line sites are still banned, this was strictly about States rights for sports gambling. TimmySmith 2,782 Posted May 14, 2018 Taxachusetts only last year or the year before, okayed full casinos. I don't see any reason to not okay sports betting too Once the Casinos are in, they run the show. I figure Delaware will be first to legalize it. Then New Jersey. Then the entire NE.
wiffleball 4,642 Posted May 14, 2018 Oddly enough, many of the casino corporations don't want this to happen. More on that in a separate post. The major sports leagues have been against this all along. They want every dollar that can be derived from their product. Their players. Their game. Think about it, grocery stores can't even use the word Super Bowl when advertising snacks for the big game. Churches can't have a Super Bowl watching party. Etc Now that this is passed, and it looks inevitable that it will spread, the next challenge will be for the various leagues to argue for a significant cut of all the proceeds. Once that's worked out? Then it's game on.
Hardcore troubadour 12,653 Posted May 14, 2018 Vegas doesn't give the leagues a cut. That doesn't mean some corrupt state governments won't let the leagues get a piece after the requisite payoffs, but they really don't have to at this point.
