Coronavirus - Doomsday

The "follow the science" thing is the part that annoys me the most.  As someone who's followed science his whole life, the response to COVID by this country was anything but following science and somehow they coopted it for the political purposes.

  • Science embraces debate.  It doesn't stifle it.
  • Science doesn't need to settle on a topic.  If a theory exists and a better one comes along.  You move on and build on that theory
  • Science doesn't give a sh¡t about political theater and who looks good and who looks bad, so if data indicates a decision is wrong, science encourages that you change course.
  • Science encourages well-thought out decisions based on facts and data.  All of the data.  It doesn't lend itself to justifying rash mutli-trillion dollar decisions based on incomplete data.  That is what is called panic.  The exact opposite of a logical science based approach.
  • Science surely doesn't encourage packing stimulus bills with pork that have nothing to do with the problem being solved

Science and politics are diametrically opposed to one another.  Politics is all about image and spin and leveraging power and shifting blame.  Science is about facts and truth and logic and context and acknowledging mistakes so they can be fixed.

This sh¡t show has absolutely nothing to do with science.

Before the Omicron narrative is that hospitals are being overrun, can we easily compare 2020 hospital capacities v/s now?  I'm curious how terminated/resigned healthcare workers have affected capacity.

It's massive and you won't hear fock all about it because it doesn't fit the narrative. I'm getting MASSIVE offers to go back to hospital work if I get vaxxed

I've got a FB friend who is a caricature of Covid nazis -- if you haven't quadruple-jabbed your unborn fetus you are a blithering idiot and he hopes your unjabbed fetus dies a gruesome death.  He got snarky with a friend of his, went as follows:

My friend:  Posts some meme with a mural of Fauci and "follow science, not morons."

His friend: "I think this meme is better. Science evolves, new hypothesis get presented and we continually learn. Please know these words are not written in anger. I love seeing peoples opinions and occasionally I share mine. I hope to see you and share a beer and stories at a reunion somewhere sometime."  The meme is Linus from Peanuts saying "'trust the science' is the most anti science statement ever.  Questioning science is how you do science!"

My friend: "My buddy's wife is a dr here in Phoenix. He hasn’t seen her all week thanks to all the unvaccinated people who are dying. Once you’re done with the science issue let me know if you need help with the math. Actually, let me help you, vaccinated people aren’t dying, unvaccinated people are. You choose whether it’s a science or a math problem."

I don't get into politics on FB, just cancer updates and posts about why my kids are >>>>>>> yours.  But if I did, I would ask my friend why this doctor is so overwhelmed when hospitalizations are about 1/3 what they were during the January peak?  I'm good at the maths but I can't seem to figure this one out, perhaps he can help me?  I would then point out that it is increasingly apparent that vaccines are of limited effectiveness against transmission; rather their value is reducing severity once contracted.  As such there is little scientific justification to the continued policy of not employing unvaxxed people who want to work.  As an engineer, dare I say sorta a scientist, my job is to solve problems, and that would solve the capacity problem.  But the decision to not use such resources is political theater at this point.

As a funny end note, he is from Australia.  In fact he sold his house here and plans to move back, but I think Covid is part of what's delaying him.  I hope he gets back there soon for his own sake, because I think he'll love the dictatorship there.

Our freedom isn't for everyone.  Particularly for people from countries that dabble in it, like Canada and Australia.   And those 2 particular countries are about the least accepting of outsiders, for western nations.  The truly sad part for your friend is he is now ruined.  He is going to hate it when he gets back.

To pretend like it is people on the left solely perverting science or presenting things one sided because of science is laughable.

True.  But we have had a front row seat for 2 years to the fallibility of a scientific-politico union.  Politics has molded the scientific method and done the same job it does with everything else.  Turned it into nonsense. It just so happens that the left "claimed" science years ago and they are the ones who have done the perversion.

The left ran on coronavirus and won, and obstructed so much of what the Trump admin was trying to accomplish. Claims of xenophobia, not using the hospital ships that were provided, deriding operation warp speed, saying HQC and other treatments would kill you and on and on. Now they have the balls to say it’s not their fault.  It’s yours.

Fine....but again- it's people on the right who are saying, "Oh first they said this and now they say that....what happened to trust the science?" The idea being from them that science is fixed forever.

Blame the media (also run by the left).  They are the ones sending the message and the ones saying everything is in stone.  Until it changes of course.  Thing is, the media makes its' money on sensationalism, so they aren't bound by the truth.

The people I'm hearing that stuff from is not coming from the MSM as people like to define it as being weapons of the left.

Also, I don't believe in absolving people of blame. It is easy in today's day and age to be aware of what is out there news wise. If you are not that is on you and not the media.

The problem arose when the left tried to pass off cultism and virtue signaling as "science".  They have followed "science" no more than the man in the moon.  This is one recent example of hundreds that are out there.

Fact:  asymptomatic, unvaxxed are virtually zero threat to this vaxxed and masked clown.

Fact: there's no "science" to disprove the widely accepted notion that air travel is not a significant cause of transmission.

On top of that, zero differentiation between unvaxxed and unvaxxed/recovered and between vaxxed/w immunity v/s vaxxed and no antibodies is an abomonation.

Even if I accept your premise about the left...again you can't pretend like the right haven't weaponized science from there end as well just with a different end goal. Yes, Swalwell is overstating. All politicians overstate to support their own points. It isn't right or okay but it happens.

As far as your last statement- it is worded in such a way to try and keep you right. Also, this is reading that ties into that point you are bringing up. Additionally a study found planes with food service had a higher chance of viral transmission. So if you are on a plane with no food service you are probably safer than if your plane has food service. :

Problem with the left, is they usually aren't from scientific fields.  They're the creatives and the artists and the sociology majors and the gender studies majors.

So they're wowed by studies with lots of names on them and official sounding titles.  Let me clue you guys in.  That study that you think is so awesome wasn't done by the awesome doctor listed as the author.  It was done by some intern going for a masters in health sciences.  The awesome doctor had a hypothesis and told his minions to go crunch numbers and write a paper.  Then he proofread it and slapped his name on it.  The guys who actually did the work are the mooks that are trying to finish this report so they can go play Call of Duty or bang some chick from Tinder or vape some weed.

That's why this stuff gets peer reviewed.  And the guys doing the peer reviews aren't much better.  They're just looking for obvious problems.  But the awesome doctor that commissioned the work knows what to say to get it past the reviewers so he already fixed any buzz words that would get the paper tripped up at review.

Scientist swore up and down that leaded fuel was harmless.  Marie Curie died because she couldn't figure out radiation is bad for you.  We still can't figure out what foods are good for us and which ones aren't.  Studies don't get published and become gospel.  It just adds to the pile of evidence one way or another.  And, honestly, by the time these studies are consumed by the media and regurgitated out to the average person, the context and nuance and detail and qualifiers and caveats are all lost.  Even you guys that love to post links to studies.  You're probably not reading these things and taking time to understand them.  You're scanning them for the information that backs up whatever you're claiming and posting your GOTCHA! I know you're not looking at the source data for accuracy and understanding if the statistical methods used are even applicable.

Stop using these studies to try and be right.  Use them to try and get it right.  That's science.

"if you're having heart problems, tighness in your chest, you could have myocarditis. Seek help...blah blah blah.........now the kicker.....this commercial brought to you by (didnt get the name of the 1st company) & pfizer.   🤣 Yeah the juice is 100% safe.

You're right, we knew this over a year ago.  Cloth masks and those "gators" are worthless.  The regular surgical masks maybe helps some and the only ones that offer any protection worthy of note is a N95.  Mask mandates are and have always been overkill.

ETA:  See this is why nobody trusts the government officials or CDC or WHO or Fauci.  They knew masks don't really work but they (the people in charge) decided it was a good idea so they flip flopped to try and get people to wear them "just in case".  They aren't really following the :science: they are using science and construing it based on political reasonings.    Just be honest and transparent and the masses will trust you more and probably do more.

It's the same with vaccines.  It's coming out now by most immunologists that its better to wait 6-8 weeks in between shots (opposed to the three).  That is more optimal as it makes the protection last much longer AND lessens any potential side effects..  HOWEVER they wanted people vaccinated ASAP so just made up the three weeks thing.

Just be 100% transparent and let us decide for ourselves.  Now nobody trusts you.

Yeah the 3 week thing was because they wanted people vaccinated ASAP, but I don’t know if there initially was much reason to believe it’d be better to wait.

I posted this earlier, but the best reason I’ve heard for “Fauci killed people” is recommending people get 2 doses before some others got 1, since I believe based on the trials 1 dose was still ~80% effective initially.  So we could have gotten more people pretty good protection, rather than some people “the best” protection.

Funny thing is, Mooney just says people don’t spell right etc, but he never points it out. Because it’s not true. He just says it hoping  it will stick. He said someone couldn’t spell scientist the other day. No one misspelled it. He’s definitely a kid. Maybe 22-23 years old.

So at least 3 of us at work have tinnitus. The other 2 tested positive for covid. I've never been tested. When I mentioned tinnitus, both said yeah their ears are ringing The one guy, I just let him know that covid can cause it in 15% of people. That's when his face lit up and he said SOB, it started soon after covid. The other one said the same last week.

How much of the black and Hispanic population is vax in DC? If you can’t answer that then I feel very comfortable speculating who the un vax there are, considering the nationwide reluctance of POC to get the vax, coupled with the medias sudden silence about it.  That’s just me , but I’m right.
