Cancelling School Year

Recommended Posts

Online learning is horribad unless the kid is interested...my kids in college have switched online...the work is garbage and the tests are a joke...they can find the answers online in 15 minute...

The hardest assigments are the papers they have to write.  Other than that...garbage.

Sure there are some bad eggs but alot of teachers are frustrated with the lack of support.  Parents cant get little johnny to do anything and its somehow the teachers fault.  Even when they arent there standing over them making them do their work.  Same as always...bad teachers yadda yadda...

I have to say that the schools and teachers have dropped the ball on this. My wife and people we know are not happy.  This shouldn’t be that difficult.  It looks to me that administrators and teachers are coming up with every reason why they can’t do something instead of focusing on what they can. Get it together.

45 minute sesson for 150 kids 2x a week?  Individually?

Um...math?  Hours in a day?  22 hours a day?  Thats if u meet once.  Primary school is alot less but middle and high school you have tons of students.  I have teachers in my neighborhood who do google meetings from 12 to 3 to go over work...4 kids show up.  Call home...parents just say they will talk to child...nothing happens. Again..as digitally savvy as kids are...they just arent doing the work...around here anyway.

Stop with the 150 kids.Thanks. Some of us have been around, and know how many kids each teacher has and it isn’t 150.  And if the kids don’t show up why the fock should I care? Teach my kid and the ones who show up.

Have to make all work accessible for all students.  As a teacher your held accountable for all...not just the ones who show up.

There it is, a reason not to do something. When you run out of bullets you fix bayonets. You do what you can and we can argue about it later.

There are only 20 or so kids in my son’s classes.  Assuming a 40 hour work week, each teacher could spend an hour with every student on facetime and still have 20 hours left for planning, grading, etc.

But she can’t even find the time for one 2 hour zoom meeting once a week.

The elementary principal us a friend of mine but that friendship will be in jeopardy if he lets this sh!t continue.

My friends are all high school teachers...no 20 kids a day...more like 6 classes of 25 a day.

Elementary and high school are different.

Either way we disagree...thats ok.  Not going to end up name calling like some here.   I hope it gets better for your kids and they dont fall behind.  I just hate to see general teacher bashing because of a few bad ones.  Its a thankless job when done right and often the object of criticism when something isnt right.

I’m not sure why people are being d1cks about teachers; maybe they’ve just had bad experiences.  For my daughter, she has had fantastic teachers as long as she’s been going to school.  And now that I have to teach her this stuff, I realize that she is a monster and have even more respect for them.

We were fortunate that our kids had excellent teachers as well.

We only had one bad teacher and it certainly made that year a struggle.  Our daughter's 3rd grade teacher was horrible. Damn that lady was worthless. I guess I can understand folks disdain for teachers if you routinely had to deal with sh1tty ones.

How is it being a d!ck for expecting them to put forth some effort for what they’re getting paid?

They’ve been getting full pay since March 15 and haven’t done anything here until last week when they finally put in a few hours zooming with the kids but  accomplishing nothing.

It’s an extended staycation for the teachers in this district

Of course teachers should put in effort; this is their job.  Perhaps I’m just fortunate with my daughters teachers, who have been accessible and helpful since this started.  Perhaps you have just been unlucky that you’ve dealt with sh1tty, lazy teachers.

I hate to paint all teachers with the same broad brush though.  People saying that teachers are all lazy sacks of sh1t doesn’t seem accurate or productive.  This wasn’t their choice any more than it was ours.  I like to believe they are making do the best the can and trying to help any way they can.

You can believe that and I’m sure some are, but not in this district.

They’re among the highest paid in the state and they’re just blowing it off.

Yesterday we received a notice telling us 6th graders will only receive a complete or incomplete grade for the rest of the year.

For each assignment, they will get a complete if they score 60% or better.  That’s a focking joke no matter how you slice it

My kid is literally teaching himself. It's an absolute sh!tshow, I feel bad for the kids who aren't bright enough to handle it.

Vudu and Reality.  What states do you live in?  When you bought your houses did you consider the school district before making a decision?  Perhaps my experience is different because the school was one of the primary considerations for my wife and I.  We got a house in a highly rated district and have been nothing but happy with the education our kids received.  We'll happy except for that one b1tch.

Southern Indiana, prominent area, highly rated school district.

Every kid has a netbook, basically set up for virtual learning. The ball has been dropped, teachers aren't stepping up. It's disappointing.

My boys’ teachers have been great. Extremely organized daily agenda, weekly check-in video conferences, and daily feedback.

My school taxes are quite high. Some of the highest around. Highly rated school district.  Ball dropped.

Middle school teacher here.  I teach five classes and average 36 kids in each class.  I don't teach math, but I believe 36 X 5 = 180.   Not sure where you have been around, but 180 > 150.  I have a couple of friends who teach 6 classes so they have closer to 200 students.

And you absolutely should not give a fock if the kids don't show up.  It's not your job.  It is, however, our job.  School districts are responsible for educating ALL students.  Not just the ones who show up.

Excellent school system normally.  It’s a national blue ribbon school.

Me moved from one high performing district to this one, which is better and wealthier.  It’s actually how crazy how rich this district is given how few kids it serves.  Big time Casino money and high property tax revenue from second home owners made it so.

Might help if you laid the teacher a few times.

A decade ago my kids had been in private school but for financial reasons we moved them to public schools.  My youngest daughter was entering 3rd grade and we found out (much too late) that she was placed in the dummy pod with the crappiest teacher.  It was so awful that we moved her to a charter school the next year.  Then she got diabetes and moved back to the same public school, but this time we knew the game, and we got her in with the teacher who I think she will remember as her favorite ever.

Point being, it is very teacher-specific, and you have to know how to get your kids with the best pods/teachers, here in AZ anyway.

This should happen with a lot of people...  Teachers should get more respect than they do...

However as my wife says, if you went into teaching to make money, you chose the wrong profession...  She didn't become a teacher to make money, she loves teaching children and helping them in one of their stressful times in their life...

That is a joke, but in all honesty grades in sixth grade don't matter...  Well at least in the district I live in they don't matter because sixth grade is still part of elementary school...

I'd like to see certain people in education positions and see how they would handle all of this.  There are a lot of hands involved and it can be harder to get things done than most think.

Upon reflection, I’m willing to cut teachers some slack on this. It’s unprecedented and there are a lot of moving parts. But going forward there has to be a better plan. Slack only goes so far, at some point you have to do better. This is China’s fault, not the teachers. I’m going to remember that, but there has to be some sort of better plan going forward.

They matter to my 6th grade son who has never received anything but A’s.

6th grade here is considered middle school.

Taxachusetts just canceled the rest of the year.

I assume they will stop paying teachers and start to pay us parents for home schooling

Are they doing the "distance learning" with the teacher or is it just no more school, up to the parents like you said?

once a week he has a 1 hour zoom thing, just to see all his classmates.

They do send him a 1 hour video to watch each day. He's focking 6, like he will sit there and watch without us screaming at him to pay attention.

We have to print out assignments for him to finish and then scan and email in.  But that's all us, the teachers do nothing
