Barbershop - Raising Prices As They Re-Open

I had this discussion with a few people in real life and wanted to get opinion from the folks here.

Tennessee, where I live, looks like it will be allowing barbers shops to open soon.

PLEASE - Don't turn this into whether Barber Shops should or should not be allowed to open yet. There's a ton of discussion on that already. 

For the sake of this poll and thread, please assume they will follow the guidelines set and keep the discussion only to what the Barbershop is doing here. 

Obviously lots of people need a haircut.

There's a popular local barbershop in town that is auctioning off haircut appointments for when the shops are allowed to open up.

Starting bid is twice the normal price of their haircut price Pre-Covid 19.

What do you think of the Barbershop doing that?

Again - my question is about how the Barber is pricing the haircuts. NOT about whether shops should open or not. 

I'm not saying what I think either way yet. I want to hear what you guys think. 

Also to add - there are several barbers at this shop and they said the money generated over what would have been normal prices would be shared among the barbers.

Unless they’re surprising you after the cut with a higher price, supply and demand. I’ve heard plenty of people say they’d pay an arm and a leg for a haircut or to have their roots colored. We’ll see.

Do you even have to bid?  Meaning, what if I bid $0 over the price of the haircut for a time slot and no one else bids on that.  Do I get the spot?  Isn't a person in the chair at regular cost better than no one in the chair?  Here's the thing, we don't know what financial issues businesses like these are in.  We can guess or assume, but no one really knows except for those business owners.  Is it possible this is gouging?  Sure.  Is it also possible that this is something they feel they need to do to at least get back on track?  Yes, I think so.  We see commercials all the time about restaurants urging people to get take out so that the business can continue to make money and not close or lay off people.  Honestly, how is this any different.  These people were forced to shut down without any income.  Seriously, how many hair cuts to people need/get?  I think any complaints on this is ridiculous in my opinion.  If it costs you $15 for a hair cut, but this time it costs you $30... is that really all that big of a deal?  Let's say this act goes on for 3 months.  How many hair cuts do you get in that time frame?  2?  God forbid it costs you an extra $30!  In time, this practice will stop because people will stop paying those prices.

 

If you are a frequent customer of a specific place, I'd think you'd have an idea of how genuine the owner is, the general operations of the place, and the state of the employees.  You should be able to gauge whether this is a necessity or owners trying to cash in on supply and demand.

Barbershop letting the market decide pricing... consumers deciding whether or not they want to pay that price... some consumers saying they would never go to that barbershop because of this.  Sounds like the system is working!

I agree with Kanil.  The market should decide.  Were I a barber though I wouldn't raise my prices but more power to them.  Also, if I am going to pay someone to cut my hair it's going to be a she with nice t!ts.

Right.  It will be interesting to see how chain salons, even the cheaper ones like Bo-Rics, etc handle pricing as things reopen.

Why would this be bad?  Can a person not sign up for Great Clips and get a haircut? 

My barber is right on the edge of our neighborhood.  It may be a front for a Russian spy ring but otherwise they have a lot of loyal clients, many of whom are not hurting for money.  If they wanted to pay a little extra cha ching to help the handful of barbers in this place in these tough times, why would anyone object to it?

For the last three weeks everyone online has been sold out of hair cutting kits and materials.....I think that is interesting as well, and watching the items people clean out at the supermarket and HomeDepot/Lowes is really interesting too

Where do you get puzzles these days?  My weekly ones are: (1) Newsday Saturday Stumper, (2) Newsday Sunday, (3) WSJ Saturday puzzle (e.g., this week is Rows Garden, I love those.  Hate cryptic ones tho), (4) WSJ Saturday Crossword, (5) LAT Sunday, (6) LAT Saturday.  I also use NYT (free) for Sudoku and a KenKen site, if I need more during a week.

OK thanks, I'll check out the McMeel and USA Today, although for the latter, I used to do those a lot in the actual newspaper when I traveled and meh... 

For WSJ the link is https://blogs.wsj.com/puzzle/  I don't know what kind of cryptics they have, it is only once every 6 weeks or so on a Saturday.  Some of their other Saturdays I love, like the Rows Garden type which is in the above link.  It's hit or miss.  They also have daily crosswords but I only do Saturday.  Also I print them all out and leave them in the crapper which is where I do them most of the time.

I can't do them on paper anymore.  It takes way too long scanning the clue list.  Online you just click a square and it snaps you right to the clue.  Of course if you're on the terlet, you don't have much choice.

All of the ones I listed have easy ways to print, if you have a printer on your home network.  The 3 sites (6 puzzles) I listed don't even make you watch ads.  The KenKen sited does though, but I don't mind.  Anyway, if you have access to a printer you should be able to just print blank puzzles.

But I'm saying I prefer to do them online.  When I said "scanning" I meant skimming your finger over the page to find the clue you're looking for, then re-finding your place in the grid and writing in your answer, etc.  It's so much quicker online, and obviously easier to delete anything that turns out to be wrong.

Well, were it ever to happen.  

But really I just mean if you're starting a new, blank quadrant and think you have the first word but aren't totally confident, you may look for a couple confirming crosses before writing it in.  Whereas online, sure, just go for it and we'll backspace if need be.
