Flawed Founders: Thomas Jefferson's descendents demand the Jefferson Memorial be torn down

From Thomas Jefferson's own family, a call to take down his memorial
Christopher Wilson

Yahoo News July 6, 2020, 8:43 AM PDT

A direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson has called for the memorial to the third president to be removed from Washington, D.C.

Writing in the New York Times Monday morning, Lucian K. Truscott IV says his ancestor’s former estate at Monticello is enough of a tribute and that the Jefferson Memorial, located next to the Tidal Basin in the nation’s capital, should be replaced with a statue honoring the abolitionist hero Harriet Tubman.

“The memorial is a shrine to a man who during his lifetime owned more than 600 slaves and had at least six children with one of them, Sally Hemings,” Truscott writes. “It’s a shrine to a man who famously wrote that ‘all men are created equal’ in the Declaration of Independence that founded this nation — and yet never did much to make those words come true. Upon his death, he did not free the people he enslaved, other than those in the Hemings family, some of whom were his own children. He sold everyone else to pay off his debts.”

In the piece, Truscott argues that Monticello serves as an “almost perfect memorial” to the nation’s third president. In his opinion, Monticello notes Jefferson’s major contributions to the creation of the United States — including the Declaration of Independence — but also includes his history as a slave owner, or, as Truscott writes, “it reveals him with his moral failings in full, an imperfect man, a flawed founder.”

Cool. Now what? When does the symbolism end and the work begin? Start with the schools in Baltimore.

The left tore down Haiti about 200 years ago and couldn't be bothered to rebuild that.  They just left it a wasteland after running the white people off the island.  The black population have suffered for 200 years and the left does not care.  Why would they care about Baltimore?  It was nothing but virtue-signalling in Haiti 200 years ago.  Its the same today.

No way. The Clinton foundation raised millions and millions for Haiti and took a direct hand in rebuilding it. I saw them get off a plane there. Then they got back on it after lunch. No room at the Hotels I guess.

They used it to launder money.  They should be shot.

Now they are saying the play Hamilton is racists. It has an almost all black cast, but hey, those people don't need to work.

Yes, but the play does not denigrate the original people.   To not denigrate the founding fathers is considered a sin within the liberal mind.   They are focking stupid as hell....

They are attacking their own people. Just in today's news. Halle Berry for thinking about taking on a transgender role. Terry Crews for speaking out about black on black crime. Hopefully this type of thing will wake up the more moderate people in these groups. But I doubt it.

Who's trying to redefine history?

It is a historical fact he owned slaves.

From the Twitters:

If anything removing the statue is an acknowledgement of Jefferson's true history.

The first slave owner in America was black. He was a billionaire at the time.  All money made off…trading slaves

yep, it just proves the falsehood that slavery was based on racism, something your ilk truly believe

Using one slave owner disproves everything that has been said about slavery being based on racism.

You can't make this stuff up.

False it was about cheap labor that was easily imported and physically gifted enough to do the work

people with slaves have always treated slaves the same as inferior animals

Except that in every southern state laws were established that anyone with “negro blood” was a slave permanently, along with all of their offspring, except in special very rare circumstances (if their owner chose to free them.) This was ratified on a federal level by the Dred Scott decision which stated that black men had no rights in the USA. So yes, in this country slavery was always very much connected to race.

Once again. Slavery arriving in the United States had nothing to do with racism. But feel free to give the reparations to all the people the democrats abused

And again that had more to do with people not wanting to give up their cheap labor and property than the fact they were racist

I don’t believe in reparations. But your overall position is, IMO, absurd.

I have a working mule. I own that mule. You pass a law that says all mules are free. I pass a law to say that all mules remain my property. It doesn’t matter if the mule is brown

FWIW I don’t like taking down the statue, or any statues. Thomas Jefferson was one of our greatest Americans. He was also a slave owner and the worst thing he did was sell slaves south, into horrible conditions, in order to beautify Monticello. He forcibly separated families, children from parents. And he was a great man.

People have to realize that historical figures are full of contradictions just like the rest of us. Trying to fit everyone into absolute modern terms of good and evil is lazy thinking. Keep the statue, point out the flaws and the greatness, and let people decide for themselves.

But we’re not talking about mules, we’re talking about people with dark skin.
