Ohio college student dies after alleged fraternity hazing incident

Recommended Posts

Why can't people start holding 20 year old adults accountable for their own behavior instead of trying to blame others? And not that I care, but the dude was under the legal drinking age while drinking booze, which is an actual crime, while he chose to drink so much that it ended up killing him.

Quote

A fraternity pledge at an Ohio college has died after an alleged hazing incident involving alcohol, according to his family’s attorney.

Stone Foltz, a 20-year-old sophomore at Bowling Green State University, was rushed to the hospital early Friday following an off-campus event organized by the school’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity where he was given a “copious amount of alcohol,” attorney Sean Alto told the Columbus Dispatch.

....

The fraternity chapter has been suspended following Foltz’s death and Pi Kappa Alpha leadership will pursue expelling all members from his international organization, the group said.

University officials said they’re working with law enforcement officials to investigate the “unfolding situation” and met with students over the weekend to decide the “short- and long-term future” of Greek life at the 15,000-student public university south of Toledo.

So stupid. I was in a fraternity. No one was ever told they need to drink alcohol as a pledge.

And no one ever forced anyone to join.

I was in one as well, and we also never forced anyone to drink, but you can’t extend that to all chapters of all fraternities.  But we did have limitless alcohol available as underage kids, albeit back in the 80s.

People love to hate fraternities, I presume most of them couldn’t get into one.  :dunno:

How would anyone even "force" someone to drink alcohol in "copious" amounts. Or any amounts for that matter?

Yeah, it's a weird phenomenon that I've experienced over the last 20 years or so. College kids are treated like retarded minors. Their parents baby them to pieces.

My folks couldn't wait till I went to college. It was basically peace out see you later. Now these supposed adults can't even do their laundry or grocery shopping.

But hey, toddlers have all the mental acuity and maturity to determine their gender and sexuality for the rest of their life.

There have probably been examples of actual physical force, but more accurate would be to say there can be various degrees of pressure to drink as part of becoming a part of a fraternity.  Everyone drank in my house; I’m not sure why you would have joined if you didn’t.  But we never required any drinking as part of a pledge activity.  That being said, the only time I’ve ever blacked out (I’m lucky, I tended to puke first) was the night I became a brother.  This was after a week of 16 hour days of physical labor fixing up the house, then being kept awake 36+ straight hours without much food during the initiation.  Next thing you know, it was over, everyone was celebrating and handing you a shot of something.  Could I have not done it?  Technically I suppose so.  But it would have been harder than you think.

Sounds so loving.

anyway, I played sports and my team I guess could be construed as a frat. That said, getting into a frat isn’t rocket science.  To say someone didn’t belong to a frat because they couldn’t get in is laughable.

I was too.  I was told to drink as a pledge, and we told pledges to drink too.

It's a fraternity, and you need to be invited, complete the pledge duties, and get voted in.  There are fraternities that will not let certain people in.

Yeah, you're at a party and someone comes up to you and says "Here you go Utilit99!" and hands you a beer and then everyone shouts "DRINK MOTHERFOCKER DRINK MOTHERFOCKER DRINK MOTHERFOCKER DRINK!" You're just gonna say "No", and put it down?  If so, that makes you a tool and someone that won't get into the fraternity.

Yeah I remember the anti-fraternity crowd was like "I don't have to pay to have friends, man."  They didn't get it, neither do you.

I had friends in the fraternity, friends outside the fraternity.  It was a lot of fun, we did cool things that "groups of friends" don't do.  Gave me lifelong connections with people, connections in the workplace, etc.

Not only that but if you refuse it could adversely affect you getting in.   One of the main reasons for the pledge process is to make sure the candidate is a good fit for the fraternity.  So, yeah, technically they can't "make" you drink but as a pledge you know that if you refuse requests from a brother it can affect your long term future in the fraternity.

I was in a fraternity and these stories are disgusting to me.  The fraternity I was in was founded in direct opposition to hazing and, while a few of our chapters have been caught violating that, fortunately my chapter wasn't one.

Lastly, the Pikes have a reputation for being dicks so this story isn't surprising.

Not this winter.  Last time we went was Feb 2020.  We ate at the Italian joint, it was really good.  Dont eat at the sh!tty place next to the lobby.  We were gonna do the steakhouse this year but bagged the trip.

When I was pledging we went on a camping retreat, great time.  I remember one of the brothers telling me to come here with a full beer.  He said "When I throw the frisbee to Matt, start chugging, and you have to finish before I get the frisbee back".  First time, fail.  Go get another beer.  Second time, fail.  Go get another beer.  I go get another beer, puke in the woods, come back, and finish the third one in time.  Lots of laughs and high fives.  I guess technically hazing but it was fun.

I was in that fraternity, but a different chapter. I think fraternities are much different now than they were then, but there are still idiots on every campus.

If I didn't want to, I wouldn't. I guess that's the difference between the self confident, and the weak who are in need of being told what to do for everyone's entertainment value.

Sounds like if you were being hazed and everyone was chanting, "SUCK HIS CACK MOTHERFOCKER, SUCK IT REAL GOOD. You would just drop to your knees with a big smile on your face.

To each their own I guess.

Fraternities are ultra ghey.

I've been to Ohio U once.  It is a pretty big party college for sure.

Maybe it is a generational difference but I believe it was quite easy to get into them when I was college aged.  Everyone was asked at parties all the time.  I dont know the process but the fraternities sought people out much harder than students tried to find a fraternity.    It would be as simple as showing up to a frat house.  Downing some beers.  Talking with a frat leader. And boom.

Ive heard you say this before and never understood it.  Perhaps we just had totally different experiences.  In the late 2000s...at UB....it looked rather easy to get into a frat.

I hung out at frat parties and drank their kegs.  But I was never interested in joining a frat.

In the early 90s (Yes I'm old) it was selective.  You had to have an invite to get into a party.  You had to get voted in as a pledge.  We would have 30-40 guys and had to choose 8-10.

It must be a generational thing.  I went to UB after community college for 2 years.  Moderately big school.  South of south campus there were a handful of streets where many people once out of dorms got apartments.  Most all the frat houses were here as well.  Basixally you hear about a party...you go in.  At the door most they would ask is if we are interested in joining at all.  You sort of say maybe and just go in.  3 floors jam packed of all sorts of people.  They were like giant raves.  Probably 90% of the guys there were not in a frat nor had intentions of joining.  We were all there for the girls and cheap beer.

Maybe they werent classy frats.  I dont know.  But frat houses holding like 200 people in a house were just where the parties were.  Anytime a frat member asked if I was interested, id say I was a junior and they were no longer interested in me.

Now I dont know what happens if you say YES YES I am!   Maybe all thr sucking up to get a spot was hard work.   But I wasnt interested.

I was in a fraternity too. Forced to drink as a pledge. Had great memories and built a network of connections that served me very well after graduating undergrad.
Looking back, the only annoying part was having to get focked up with sorority girls every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
