The suez canal primarily effects the middle east and southern europe. Trade from America to europe or America to Asia is not effected.

There's a region off of Thailand that has shipping capacity that blows the Suez canal out of the water. So to speak. In my old job, that was one of the things that I was tasked with finding and researching. It's amazing how maybe three choke points in the entire world can change everything. And I mean every GD thing.

I presume you are referring to the Malacca and Sunda straights. The Malacca straight runs between Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The sunda runs between Sumatra and the island of Java.

Pretty much all shipping traffic between Africa, the Middle East, and India to east Asia must pass through there, so yes, it is probably the most strategic stretch of water on earth.

The Chinese know this, and know it is an easy way to cut off their oil. They have taken steps... namely...

1. Construction of naval bases in the Indian Ocean in places like Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

2. They are attempting to build rail and road links to lessen their reliance on this waterway. For example they are constructing ports in Myanmar and links to then transport resources overland from Myanmar into Chinese controlled Xinjiang.

3. Building a canal across the Thai isthmus to bypass the Malacca straight entirely.
