Friends to the left of him, critics to the right: McCarthy’s stuck in the chase

House Republicans are playing high-stakes tug of war with Kevin McCarthy’s speakership dreams. And now both sides are digging in their heels.

On the GOP leader’s right, conservatives are meeting with House rules officials to strategize ahead of a planned floor challenge to McCarthy during the speakership vote on Jan. 3. Meanwhile, centrist Republicans are making threats of their own to colleagues who’d bulldoze McCarthy — including that they’ll work with Democrats to recruit a GOP speaker candidate more to their liking.

“We’re going to do vote after vote after vote for Kevin, and if they refuse to play ball — that’s why I’m saying we’re willing to work across the aisle to get an agreeable Republican — but we’re not going to get pushed around,” centrist Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said.

Five Republicans so far are threatening to oppose McCarthy in that vote, a number that’s possibly enough to derail him given the slim GOP majority next year. But other GOP lawmakers have grown increasingly frustrated as those conservatives decline to float a viable alternate candidate, with some predicting that McCarthy’s foes don’t have a fallback plan or any possible consensus pick.

One House Republican said they’re aware of a handful more members who are keeping their opposition private until just before the January vote. And while some of McCarthy’s fiercest public critics have openly claimed that there are about 20 hard nos in the conference, others believe the Californian will likely chip away at his opposition.

But some of that opposition is only getting bolder. Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Bob Good (R-Va.) both insisted this week that they are hard nos against the GOP leader — saying they would not vote present and would appear on the House floor to vote against him. Both said they planned to cast their votes for Biggs at the moment.

I am trying to get some clarity on this.  Is the opposition because the guy seems to be too friendly to Democrats?

Article has it that it's Freedom Caucus members who are going to decide this. I doubt it's that he's too friendly to Democrats. I can't find a specific reason they would be opposed to him either. Only thing I keep seeing is they want specific concessions.

Welcome to the politics of the thin majority, here's our guest speaker, Joe Manchin.

I think there's a fringe section that thinks he's too moderate.  And then there a fringe section that think's he's too extreme.

I'm betting the ones who know they have to move off of abortion, Hunter Biden investigations, and election denial will win out.

I don't see Kevin getting it.

He's no Nancy, that's for sure.

RRIIIPPP go Trump SOTU speech.

beautiful.

there are those in the GOP that think they need to moderate to stay in office.  others think the GOP needs to move to the right.  its always a fight there. remember, Trump wanted to pass legislation to lower drug prices and the GOP congress blocked him and the democrats just sat there and watched the GOP slit its own throat on that issue.  the GOP doesnt always agree on stuff.

I didn't know much about Biggs, looked him up.  He's from a ruby red district (#5) on the SE side of Phoenix metro, maybe @Big Guy's district?  Anyway, MAGA, Trump endorsed, election denier, etc.

Here is Biggs' statement about throwing his hat into the Speaker ring:

Quote

This week, I challenged House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

I received 31 votes during the initial GOP Conference meeting, meaning Leader McCarthy did not obtain the 218 votes required to become the next House speaker.

My bid to run for Speaker is about changing the paradigm and the status quo. Minority Leader McCarthy and his speakership should not be a foregone conclusion.

The American people want us to turn a page. They do not want excuses or performance art, they want action and results. The promised red wave turned into a loss of the United States Senate, a razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives, and upset losses of premiere political candidates.

There are reforms that must be made in the House in order to facilitate representation of our constituents. Items such as allowing members to move to amend bills, only allowing bills to cover a single subject, and requiring bills to go through committees before bringing them to the floor. Members must also be granted more time to read the legislation and debate the merits of it.

The official vote for House Speaker will occur on January 3, 2023. I look forward to serving our great nation and steering our country in a better direction.

Check out my latest opinion pieces on my run for Speaker:

American Greatness: I Cannot Vote for Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker

My party seems insistent on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.  I think the Republican party just needs to implode and see what rises from the ashes.    :(

Speaking of that, I just saw yesterday that the district in Arizona that is refusing to certify because they dispute the Maricopa results, could flip a GOP congressman to a Dem.  Apparently if they don't certify and multiple other ifs, their votes will be tossed.  Now that would be pretty good self own.

He lost. I still question the election. I don’t really care if that puts me in some group. And only Trump people are election deniers? Been happening for at least 22 years. It’s not new to 2020.

Beautiful.  AZ has some of the dumbest state-level and lower politicians in the history of ever.  I fully expect this to come to fruition.  Jeebus.  :(

I still question the election and have posted as such many times here.  But making it front and center is not a recipe for success.  To your second point, election deniers can be Dems as well. See Stacey Abrams, who got her ass kicked in Georgia.

Ok. I just don’t like the silencing of some people who do question it, painting them as unamerican or conspiracy nuts.  There is a huge gap between rioting at the capital and calling BS on much of what went on. The left likes to conflate the two, for a reason.

the Speaker can be anyone.  even a foreigner.  note that the Constitution does place age, residency and natural born citizenship requirements on the office of president itself, so that while vladimir putin could be speaker of the house, he cannot rise to the presidency by succession.  newt can be voted speaker. you dont have to hold any office to be speaker, it is tradition that a house member always gets it.

Yea...I kinda knew that (sorta...well mebbe not really)  Thank you for that.
I was trying to be facetious, but I'm obviously not good at that.

For the real question here, do I start Keenan Allen over AJ Brown ?

It  didn't come to fruition.  Court gave them a 5PM deadline yesterday, the Dem voted for certify(like they had been) and one of the two GOP's voted for certifying.  Not sure why the other didn't vote, just saw that the result was 2-0.

I've thought about this before a little, but this illustrates a big problem IMO, elections are run by the participants.  People are voted by party to run the elections, this is a messed up situation. Didn't seem to be a big deal before, but the vote counters are starting to assert authority over elections they shouldn't have(as in this example).  Pretty sure it would take a constitutional amendment to change that nationally---and on a state level I don't see too many legislators willingly giving up that power.

The Dems just elected an election denier to the minority speaker position. So, yes, it definitely happens on both sides.

ROFL

Honcho, the guy who supports democrats, which is the party that HATES checks and balances, is now crying for checks and balances.

another hypocritical position.

most recently, the democrats are skyscreaming that the GOP House might conduct oversight on Hunter Biden's Laptop.  That would actually be some checks and balances if that took place.  but nope, skyscream immediately and forever.  we can't have anyone running investigations except liberals.

The speaker needs to say close the border, get fauci & the covid crimials, release the j6 tapes and fock the ukraine among other things.

Anyone that can’t do that is a POS.

Hopefully we can provide support without having a Speaker in place via other mechanisms since the GOP is having internal issues.
