Here comes the debt ceiling crisis: June 1

Recommended Posts

Hey guys put aside your transgender paranoia for just a minute. Unlike that subject, this one might just affect you personally, along with everyone you know.

The Republicans are going to hold up the debt ceiling unless Democrats agree to major spending cuts. At this moment we don’t know what those cuts are, but we suspect they would eviscerate Biden’s entire program of the last few years. Which is a really stupid thing to demand because Biden will never agree to it.

Meanwhile Biden and the Democrats refuse to negotiate at all which is just as stupid if not more so. And to make things even worse, conservative hardliners have threatened to veto ANY compromise agreement that might eventually emerge between Biden and McCarthy and oust McCarthy from power if he budges at all- and yes they have the votes within the Republican caucus to veto anything they want.

In this game of chicken there are no winners, and the losers appear to be the American public. Buckle up.

There is already a thread on the debt ceiling. I think you started it.

Why don’t you stop worrying about the number of threads and talk about the subject? And if you don’t want to that’s fine too.

Oh well you mean govt can’t throw more money away on foreign proxy wars and building submarines?  Fine by me

Not raising the debt ceiling has nothing to do with future spending. It means that we refuse to make payments to our creditors for money we already spent. But I’m sure you already knew it.

I am happy to set aside the transgender paranoia just as soon as you set aside your racism paranoia.

I am rather gratified that it is suddenly true that Liberals now care about the economy, I will take it.

Now the question I have is will the Democrats continue to refuse to negotiate at all and demand caputilation from the Republicans. I mean, its not supposed to work that way of course, but we also know the Democrats think they have the only answers.....so....yeah

One party trying to hold the opposing party's President's feet to fire on debt ceiling negotiations is not a new phenomenon.

Hope that helped.

raising the debt ceiling means more spending, if you max out your credit cards dont come b1tching at me that you need a higher limit so you can "make the payment" change your spending tactics

We need to vote on a ceiling for how many debt ceiling threads there should be.

We need a higher ceiling for threads, or the forum will be doomed! People will die! Think of the children!

Yes we do:

- limit increase to 1% a year for the next 10 years

- takeback all unused Covid funds

- kill student debt forgiveness

All reasonable, so ask yourself again, who is it that's holding things up.

And, lol, this happens every time and every time the ceiling gets raised.  You're the chicken screaming at the sky for no reason. As usual. Foking clown.

The three points you just listed are not the Republican plan. They don’t want to limit spending  increases; they want to cut spending. If what you listed here was the GOP proposal I imagine a deal would be worked out.

You are 100% wrong. Our Government revenue tops $5 trillion a year, that is plenty of money to pay all of our debts that are due plus SS, Medicare, SNAP, etc.

We don’t have a balanced budget. We’ve gotten better at lowering the annual deficit recently but we’re still in the red every year. We can’t have a balanced budget without serious cuts.

I didn't watch 24. I had to dig the bunker area. Had to use soup cans because I didn't want them to be able to track equipment rental or a shovel purchase. I even paid cash for the soup cans and wore a mask. Can't be too safe.

There shouldn't be any negotiation period. These are things already purchased by the govt, they should be paid, EOS.

That our system requires a debt ceiling vote to pay for things already purchased is just  one more stupid thing our country does.

The House is going to vote on raising the debt ceiling to day or tomorrow- with conditions. The Senate won’t take it up even if it passes. Biden says he’ll veto; too many harmful cuts.

Based on what I’m reading, some of the demands are reasonable. Some are not reasonable. I disagree with most of the demands but elections have consequences and the Republicans did win a majority. So they get to have their say.

Among the unreasonable demands, IMO, is only raising the debt ceiling for one year, so that this whole process can be repeated next year. No thanks. It is also, in general, a complete reversal of Biden’s domestic agenda, which they know he will never accept. On the other hand, many of the cuts aren’t actually cuts at all but a limit of increases- that’s something the Democrats should be able to work with.

The Democrats and Biden need to respond to this, need to show a willingness to compromise. I don’t know if compromise is possible with the Republican hardliners. But the Dems have to try.

So a limit of increases, not cuts, dismantles the whole agenda? The whole thing? Should have thought of that then.

On May 31st, an agreement gets reached where the Republicans get to keep all their tax cuts while the Democrats get all their spending desires met.

It’s interesting to me that so few here want to discuss this. Of all the  issues listed on the first page of this board, this the only one that really threatens to have an immediate negative effect on everyone here.

Watch.  This will last like two posts.  Why has Biden refused to negotiate over the debt celing until now?

Biden has now invited members of Congress, including McCarthy, to meet on May 9. That’s a good sign. But it seems to me that it will be very difficult for either side to come down from their positions.

Because he’s a partisan fool. How the hell do I know? He’s behaving badly ( the rest of the Democrats aren’t helping.)
